Karma Is A Killer

On July 4th, Ava Brucks (Chase Sui Wonders) returns to her hometown of Southport, North Carolina, for her best friend Danica Richards’ ( Madelyn Cline) engagement party. The group, including Ava’s ex, Milo Griffin (Jonah Hauer-King), Danica’s fiancé, Teddy Spencer (Tyriq Withers), and Stevie Ward (Sarah Pidgeon), recently out of rehab, drive to watch the fireworks, but their night turns disastrous when Teddy causes a car driven by Sam Cooper to swerve off a cliff. At Teddy’s insistence, the friends agree to cover up the accident, recruiting Teddy’s politician father (Billy Campbell) to handle the fallout.

A year later, Ava returns to Southport for Danica’s bridal shower, and relationships are fraught. Danica and Teddy have broken up and Danica is now engaged to Wyatt (Joshua Orpin). Tensions resurface as the group tries to reconnect, but the past isn’t buried, during the shower, Danica receives a chilling note “I know what you did last summer.” Suspecting Teddy may be responsible, the group confronts him on his father’s boat, only to find he’s spiraling into alcoholism and denies sending the message.

That night, Wyatt is murdered by a figure dressed in a slicker and brandishing the Fisherman’s signature hook, staging a grisly tableau and scrawling “You can’t erase the past” in blood. As panic and suspicion grow, Ava and her friends are pursued by the killer. A true crime podcaster, Tyler Trevino (Gabbriette Bechtel), researching the infamous Ben Willis massacre of 1997, is also drawn into the chaos, ultimately falling victim herself when she and Ava are attacked at a crime scene connected to the original killings.

Desperate for help, the group turns to survivor Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), who believes the new Fisherman killer may have a personal connection to Sam, the accident victim. But with the authorities and townsfolk eager to avoid scandal and maintain their tourist reputation, the friends realize they must face the past and the deadly consequences alone as secrets unravel and trust breaks down

For fans of the original movies I know What You Did Last Summer I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, this one might be a disappointment. It feels more like a nostalgic homage to the originals than another entry into the franchise. The appearance of Freddie Prinze Jr.Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brandy Norwood (From I Still Know What You did Last Summer appearing in a Cameo scene after the credits) leave it fully feeling like a nostalgic romp into the past. And yet it feels like it belongs in the franchise, as a marker that that was the past and this is now the direction and the future of the franchise.

There is a scene after the credits roll where Brandy’s character Karla (From I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is watching the news and sees Jennifer Love Hewitt in the story about what just happened in the movie. Then there is a knock at the door and Jennifer is there and explains to Carla as she hands her an envelope, “There is something we have to do….” Perfectly opening the door for another movie in the franchise. It was more comedy than outright Slasher Horror, although it had it’s moments. I did jump on occasion and I laughed and chuckled a lot at some of the dialogue and antics.

Was it worth a watch you ask? Sure, give it a go! ‘Tis the season for Streaming and Screaming!

A House Of Dynamite

2025   Netflix

Rated:  R

Length:  1 hr  52min

Apocalyptic ~ Drama ~ Political Thriller

Directed by:  Kathryn Bigelow

Starring:  Idris ElbaRebecca FergusonGabriel BassoJared Harris, and Tracy Letts.

NOT IF….WHEN.

FROM NETFLIX TUDUM:

In A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, the day starts like any other, but then everything changes. When a single unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible, and how to respond.

That’s the nerve-wracking premise of A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, a new thriller directed by Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) and written by Noah Oppenheim (Zero Day). Boasting an impressive ensemble cast including Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, the film is a minute-by-minute account of what the highest levels of government would do in the face of a nuclear attack on America. Bigelow, in her own words, explains what drove her to make this visceral story after Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker and the Oscar-nominated Zero Dark Thirty.

“I grew up in an era when hiding under your school desk was considered the go-to protocol for surviving an atomic bomb. It seems absurd now, and it was, but at the time, the threat felt so immediate that such measures were taken seriously. Today, the danger has only escalated. Multiple nations possess enough nuclear weapons to end civilization within minutes. And yet, there’s a kind of collective numbness, a quiet normalization of the unthinkable. How can we call this “defense” when the inevitable outcome is total destruction? I wanted to make a film that confronts this paradox, to explore the madness of a world that lives under the constant shadow of annihilation, yet rarely speaks of it.”

THE REVIEW:

A House of Dynamite unfolds over the tense course of eighteen minutes, told through three interwoven perspectives. The story begins with President James Ellis (Idris Elba) attending a charity basketball event, where he is abruptly thrust into a national crisis upon learning of an unidentified intercontinental ballistic missile heading toward the United States, most likely hitting Chicago. As the President is evacuated, his responsibilities weigh heavily upon him, especially as he struggles to decide whether to retaliate or stand down amid this unprecedented threat.

Meanwhile, Captain Olivia Walker (Rebecca Ferguson), second-in-command of the military operations room, remains calm and composed, overseeing the frantic defensive response. Alongside her team, she scrambles to track and intercept the incoming missile. On the military command front, General Anthony Brady (Tracy Letts) fervently advocates for an aggressive counterstrike strategy to defend the nation, whereas Deputy National Security Advisor Jake Baerington (Gabriel Basso) counsels restraint, advising the President to avoid rash escalation. These conflicting military strategies deepen the tension and emphasize the grave stakes involved.

Adding a personal layer to the unfolding disaster, Secretary of Defense Baker (Jared Harris) is haunted by his estranged daughter residing in Chicago and becomes emotionally overwhelmed, which culminates tragically. His distracted demeanor contrasts sharply with the high-stakes government deliberations. The missile intercept attempts by ground-based interceptors tragically fail one after the other, escalating the sense of impending doom and the fragile limits of America’s defense capabilities.

The film concludes with the nation on the brink, leaving the President’s final decision ambiguous, underscoring the profound uncertainty and volatility inherent in nuclear deterrence. Government officials seek refuge in the Raven Rock Mountain Complex, while the broader fate of the country remains unresolved, symbolizing the ever-present threat of nuclear annihilation in a “house of dynamite” world where every move carries deadly consequences. In other words, we are left hanging in the end, left to draw our own conclusion as to what happens next.

It was an edge of your seat ride in the beginning, watching the events unfold. But then the questions started in my mind. Who?, Why?, Where? What is the President going to decide to do? As the movie is literally 18 minutes dissected, it leaves a lot of room for the aftermath and the stories untold. I think the movie would ultimately have been more enjoyable had it explored the aftermath, what happens when the missile hits, if it hits, and what happens then. I am not really fond of movies that leave you hanging, I personally love a resolution ending.

So, in conclusion, it was a nice ride but disappointing in the end. Although I think the Director’s aim was to make us think about “What if”, I think it would have been more effective to follow through and let us see the end result. And it would have been nice to see a lot more of Idris Alba in the first half. So that’s a maybe for me on this one, I wouldn’t watch it again.

The Woman In The Yard Coming To Amazon Prime Friday October 31, 2025

Just In Time For Halloween! The Spooky Psychological Horror Movie The Woman In The Yard Streams on Amazon Prime Friday October 31, 2025!

A lone, spectral woman shrouded entirely in black appears on a family’s front lawn without explanation and warns them “Today’s the day.”

Where did she come from? What does she want? When will she leave? Only The Woman in the Yard knows.

From Blumhouse, the most successful global brand in horror, comes a new original chiller starring BAFTA and SAG nominee Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Harder They Fall, The Piano Lesson) as Ramona, a woman crippled by grief after she survives a car accident that takes her husband (Russell Hornsby; BMF, Fences).

Seriously injured, Ramona now must care for their 14-year-old son (Peyton Jackson; Respect, American Refugee) and 6-year-old-daughter (Estella Kahiha; Will Trent, BMF), alone in her rural farmhouse.

Then one day the woman takes form in their yard.

Ramona assumes the woman (Okwui Okpokwasili; The Exorcist: Believer, Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) is lost or demented, but as the woman creeps nearer and nearer to the house, it becomes clear she is no ordinary figure and her intentions are anything but peaceful. Now Ramona must rally to protect herself and her children from the grasp of the woman who simply won’t leave them alone.

The Woman in the Yard is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Black Adam, Jungle Cruise), who recently directed Deadwyler in the upcoming action thriller Carry On. The film is written by first-time feature screenwriter Sam Stefanak.

The film is produced by Jason Blum, producer of The Invisible Man and The Black Phone, along with acclaimed Emmy nominated producer Stephanie Allain p.g.a. (The Exorcist: Believer, Hustle & Flow), and is executive produced by star Danielle Deadwyler, Jaume Collet-Serra, James Moran and Gabrielle Ebron.

TOP TEN UNIVERSAL CLASSIC MONSTER MOVIES FOR HALLOWEEN

Abbott & Costello, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr., Vincent Price and Boris Karloff in these early classics were some of the first movies I watched as a kid. My introduction to horror and the macabre long before CGI and the special effects we have today. No Halloween would be complete without a look back at the classics. When I think of classic horror, these Universal Classic Monster Movies instantly come to mind.

These films, made from the late 1920s through the 1950s, introduced some of the darkest, most unforgettable creatures in cinema history. Dracula’s endless thirst, Frankenstein’s misunderstood monster, the tortured Wolf Man, and the chill of the Invisible Man, among others. Universal Pictures didn’t just create scary movies, they built a spooky world filled with gothic atmosphere, haunting music, and characters who were as tragic as they were terrifying.

What’s truly special about these monsters is that they’re more than just villains, they’re outsiders caught between worlds, struggling with their own nature and destiny. Over decades, these stories expanded with thrilling sequels, crossover battles, and even laugh-out-loud moments with Abbott and Costello, crafting one of the first shared cinematic universes. For any Halloween marathon or spooky movie night, these classics remain essential viewing, proving their magic to be timeless for horror fans old and new.
