QUESTION EVERYTHING….

HERETIC MEANING:

A heretic is someone whose beliefs or actions contradict the established doctrines or principles of a particular religion, group, or institution. This term is often used in a religious context, particularly within Christianity, but can also apply to other areas where there are established systems of belief or practice.

In Christianity, a heretic is someone who holds religious beliefs that differ from the official teachings of their church, especially the Roman Catholic Church. While a heretic might also be a dissenter or nonconformist, the core idea is the contradiction of established doctrine or belief, rather than simply disagreeing.

Historically, and sometimes even today, being labeled a heretic has led to conflict, persecution, or even violence, as established authorities may view heresy as a threat.

SYNOPSIS:

Two young missionaries from the LDS Church, timid Sister Paxton (Chloe East) and confident Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher), arrive at the home of a reclusive middle-aged man, Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). He invites them in, assuring them that his wife is preparing a blueberry pie in the back of the house. They begin to discuss religion, and Sister Paxton playfully expresses a desire to visit others, after death, as a butterfly that appears on the hands of her loved ones. During the conversation, Reed makes several uncomfortable comments about their faith. When Reed steps out of the room, Barnes realizes that the smell of blueberry pie is from a candle, the front door is locked, and they have no phone signal.

THE REVIEW:

From the moment that the skies turn ominous, the rain starts and Mr. Reed opens the door, you sense it. It builds slowly as the two Sisters enter Mr. Reed’s house, a general sense of unease, of foreboding. As the two sisters sit in his living room, he assures them that his wife is baking a blueberry pie and will be out shortly to join them. Mr. Reed keeps disappearing into the other room and returning alone without his wife. The two sisters repeatedly tell Mr. Reed that as per Church rules they are not allowed to be alone with a man in his house, there must be another adult female present or they will have to leave. Sister Barnes turns around the candle that Mr. Reed had placed on the table and is dismayed to see that it is a Blueberry Pie scented candle.

Her mind quickly begins to sense trouble and rightly so. The two sisters start scheming and pretend they have a phone call from their Pastor and must return to the Church. Mr. Reed promptly informs them that they are lying because there is no cell service in his “metal” house. And a game of cat and mouse ensues as the two sisters desperately try to con their way into leaving as the kind and gentle Mr. Reed starts to appear a little more treacherous and deceiving. Using words and a conversation about Religion and Faith, and props like board games and different religious books like The Holy Bible and The Koran. Mr. Reed cons and tricks them step by step deeper into his house, into his wicked little game.

It is Hugh Grant as you’ve never seen him before. Dark, witty, evil, very smart and educated in the world of Religion. It is devilishly fun and very scary watching Hugh Grant turn from the nice Mr. Reed into the twisted demented Heretic who oversees a very wicked and evil game in his house. A game he has crafted and perfected over years of practice. The terror builds slowly until it is palpable and unescapable. It is terrifying, a true Horror movie that builds and builds until it strangles you with discomfort. It is thought provoking, and like a train wreck, you are sucked into it unable to look away.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This is a good one, a truly psychologically terrifying Horror Movie. Hugh Grant is magnificently evil portraying a side we’ve never seen before. Bravo on that performance. Kudos to Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as well. I loved Sophie Thatcher in this as well as Companion and I am going to have to watch her debut in the 2018 Movie Prospect as well as 2023’s The Boogeyman, but Chloe East really shines in this. Going from the innocent naïve young Sister to the worldly very smart young woman matching wits and outsmarting the Devil himself was a beauty to behold.

Highly Recommended!

How far would you go for the people that you love?

FROM THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE: (www.diealonethemovie.com)

Lost in a world reclaimed by nature and overrun by mysterious creatures, Ethan, a young man with amnesia navigates the dangerous landscape in search of his lost love, Emma. His journey takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Mae, a hardened and eccentric survivor. Together, Ethan and Mae face threats both human and otherwise before a fateful encounter with Kai unravels a secret that lies just beyond Ethan’s fractured memory.

The story of DIE ALONE took years to morph into the final version of our film. Years ago, it was  a simple survival story of a young couple starting their life, only to be faced with the end of the world. Then, as the years (and script drafts) went on,  I got less interested in the idea of a zombie apocalypse and more interested in the idea of what it takes to be a ‘survivor’. At its core, this film is really about one question – how far would you go for the people that you love?

I had been dreaming of making this film for nearly a decade, so seeing the actors finally bring the characters to life was incredibly moving. For me, there isn’t a false note in the entire cast. They were all easy-going, passionate, and deeply committed.

Having Carrie-Anne lead our film as Mae was wonderful. Mae is a complex character, and Carrie-Anne brought such soul and wit to the role. Douglas Smith was the perfect Ethan, nailing a challenging role, while Kimberly-Sue was a surprising gift, bringing a burst of energy to her portrayal of Emma, Ethan’s long-lost love.

Frank Grillo is intimidating as Kai, but I also love the tenderness he brings to the role. Working with Jonathan Cherry and Amy Matysio was a pleasure, as always—two actors I’ve cast in almost every film I make; they are my ringers. Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat and Steven Roy also played key roles and were a delight to work with. What can I say, the entire cast was fantastic!

For me, this film is inspired by the experience of being human—struggling to survive, do my best, and show kindness in tumultuous times. I wrote it before the Covid pandemic, back when I almost romanticized the idea of discarding my phone and leaving society behind. After living through the last few years, my perspective on the idea of a post-apocalyptic world has changed dramatically. Now, the film and its story are about holding on tightly to your family and loved ones, even when times are tough and the world around you feels cold. I also know a lot of tough women, so the character of Mae is inspired by the tough women in my life who keep things moving and endure my endless daydreaming!

I like films that are a blend of different genres and hard to define. I think life itself is weird and messy; one minute you are laughing and the next you are crying, so I love making films that reflect that. One of my favorite aspects of DIE ALONE is that it’s hard to pin down in terms of genre. People will likely assume it’s a horror film because of my previous work, but it’s far more a love story and a character study with moments of comedy, horror, and suspense. It’s a weird one!

FROM BOBBY:

I have watched so many movies lately I have hit a point where I have been having a hard time finding something new to watch. The new release movies are just starting to come to streaming and I’m watching them as soon as they hit streaming. So last night I was on the hunt and having a difficult time when I saw Die Alone. Well that’s new I thought, might as well give it a go. I hadn’t heard of it so I was going in blind not really knowing what it was about. Other than it was post-apocalyptic and this guy was wandering around looking for his girlfriend.

From the very first scene when Ethan (Douglas Smith) is narrating and we see him at the top of a hill overlooking an old house down in the valley, you get an eerie sense of foreboding. And that stays with you as events unfold. I found myself drawn in pretty quick as the mystery of the story unfolds itself. When Mae ( Carrie-Anne Moss) enters the scene you get the sense that she is an experienced survivor pretty quickly. A real Bad-ass not afraid to take out any threat at the drop of a hat. Ethan seems so innocent and vulnerable Mae saves him from a couple of bad guys and takes him in and shelters him.

As the story progresses there are a lot of flashbacks of Ethan and his girlfriend Emma before she got “lost”. It reminded me of the movie Strange Darling where the flashbacks told a different story and changed the perception as you went along. It keeps you guessing as to what the story really is and there is a twist at the end that is a pretty good one. It feels like one of those movies where you need to watch it a second time and you will see it in an entirely different perspective, like The Others and The Sixth Sense.

I really liked the movie, I enjoyed the ride and will watch it again to see if it has a different perspective to it now that I know the outcome. I thought Carrie-Ann Moss was really good in this. Tough, conniving and yet vulnerable and full of love. Douglas Smith seemed in the beginning like a little lost puppy dog you felt sorry for and I liked Kimberly-Sue Murray as Emma. It’s definitely worth a watch, at 91 minutes it is a quick ride, a good bit of fun.

Find someone made just for you.

The Movie starts with this scene in a grocery store. It is when Iris and Josh first met…..

Iris is shopping in the grocery store pushing a grocery cart, when she sees peaches displayed in the produce department. She stops and picks up a peach, smells it, and looks up to see a guy named Josh smiling at her. He walks around to the front of her cart near an orange display, and attempting to make small talk, grabs an orange. All the oranges in the display fall onto the floor…..He sheepishly starts to laugh and Iris  starts to laugh too. Josh says, “Well That was smooth..” and laughs. Iris agrees as she laughs and smiles at him, “Yeah…So smooth.

As this voiceover from Iris plays:

Most the time it’s like, I don’t know, it’s like there’s this thick black cloud covering everything.

Like we see the world but, we don’t really see the world, you know?

We’re all just stumbling around. Directionless. No sense of meaning. No sense of purpose.

I know that might sound super depressing but honestly, I think it’s a good thing.

Because it makes us appreciate the other times.

Those brief transcendent moments when the lights flicker on, the black cloud parts and you see the world for what it really is.

And suddenly there’s meaning. Suddenly there’s purpose.

If you’re lucky you’ll experience this once in your lifetime.

For me, it happened twice.

The first was the day I met Josh.

And the second…..the day I killed him.

“Iris, Wake Up” Josh says. Iris wakes up, yawns and asks Josh, “How long was I out?” “You’ve been out for awhile now, what were you dreaming about?” Iris answers, “I was dreaming about when we first met.” They are driving in Josh’s self driving autonomous car to a friend’s house out in the countryside for a weekend getaway. They are meeting with some other friends to spend the weekend together and have some fun. The house belongs to Sergey, a shady Russian business man “whose hands are in some dirty business”, so he says.

Eli and his lover Patrick have already arrived and Josh and Iris pull up and park next to their car. As they enter the house they are greeted by Kat, who Iris is convinced doesn’t like her very much. Patrick is cooking, Sergey is drinking and making drinks for everyone else and Eli comes downstairs to greet Josh and Iris. And the weekend begins! There is food, there is drink, there is dancing, a fun time for all, let the good times roll!

But not for long! Soon things spiral out of control and not in the way it was intended! For there is more to this little planned getaway than meets the eye, as there is to Iris, Patrick, Josh and Kat. Sometimes the bad guy isn’t who you think it is, or is it. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, it goes in a completely different direction. And when you think you have that figured out, guess again. Nope, you’re wrong!

There are shades of Subservience and M3GAN in this movie. Yes, there are A.I. Robots, but you think they turn bad and run amok. Not nese-celery! New word I made up! Anyway, I thought Sophie Thatcher was great as Iris. I really liked her in this. Great job I say. And Jack Quaid as well, I just found out he is the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, how about that! I love the story and the twists and turns, and I am fond of the Sci-Fi AI Robot genre of things. I am a big Bladerunner fan and love both of those futuristic AI Robotic humanoid filled movies. It is a twisty turny thrilling Sci-Fi Movie that leaves you rooting for who you thought was the bad guy in the end.

Yes, yes and yes on Companion.

I am a Sophie Thatcher and Companion Fan now!

Drama ~ Horror ~ Thriller

Directed by:  M. Night Shyamalan

Starring:  Josh HartnettAriel DonoghueSaleka Night ShyamalanHayley Mills, and Alison Pill.

“This whole concert? It’s a trap. They’re watching all the exits, checking everyone that leaves. There’s no way to get out of here.”

Movie Synopsis from Netflix Tudum:

To celebrate her good grades, Philadelphia firefighter Cooper Abbott (Josh Hartnett) takes his daughter, Riley (Ariel Donoghue), to see her favorite pop star, Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan), in concert. But when they arrive at the event, Cooper notices that security is on extra-high alert. He watches as, one by one, guards remove other dads accompanying their daughters from the show, and realizes that every exit is blocked off by police. An employee at the arena tells Cooper that the FBI has reason to believe a notorious serial killer known as The Butcher is attending the concert, and they’re using the event to try to ensnare and arrest him. With the entire arena under surveillance, and thousands of armed police officers ready to sniff out the killer, The Butcher will have to find his way out without drawing attention to himself  — or his daughter.

Movie Backstory from Netflix Tudum:

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan (The Watchers, After Earth), Trap isn’t directly based on a true story, but the plot was partially inspired by a real-life sting operation known as Operation Flagship. In 1985, the US Marshals Service and the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department sent out more than 3,000 invitations by mail to fugitives with outstanding warrants living in the DC area. The invitations, which were sent using the name of the fictitious television company Flagship International Sports TV, stated that the individuals had been selected to receive free tickets to a Dec. 15 NFL game between the Washington Redskins (now known as the Washington Commanders) and the Cincinnati Bengals, as well as a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to Super Bowl XX in New Orleans.

When the fugitives arrived to retrieve their tickets at what they were led to believe was the network’s headquarters, they were greeted by undercover marshals and police officers posing as ushers, cheerleaders, mascots, and other event staff. Operation Flagship resulted in the arrest of 101 people. Speaking about the inspiration behind Trap, Shyamalan told BBC News that he heard about Operation Flagship as a kid. “I thought it was totally absurdist, that this actually happened … This was real-life criminals, FBI and police,” he said, “They dressed up as cheerleaders and mascots and were dancing around with them and goofing around with them.”

What I thought about Trap:

What a Trap! I couldn’t resist, it was too easy. It was a little cheesy, a little campy. If I was a young teenage girl I might be really drawn in by Saleka’s character, but otherwise it just wasn’t that good. It really was kinda silly and implausible and I didn’t think Saleka is that good an actor. After the fact I started thinking you know…that seemed like M. Night Shyamalan was trying to showcase his daughter’s talents.

So I googled that and that is exactly what Trap is. A showcase by M. Night Shyamalan to showcase his daughter’s music and acting aspirations. “Daddy…….can you make me a star? Please daddy…” I just don’t think she was that good on either front. Teenage girls might think otherwise, I don’t know. Kind of a letdown for an M. Night Shyamalan movie. I expect more after his track record of really good thrillers.

That’s a no for me Dog……

“Love hurts, love scars…Love wounds and marks, any heart not tough enough or strong enough, to take a lot of pain…….takes a lot of pain.”

I watched this last night. I was looking for something to watch more than I was looking for a movie to review. Strange Darling caught my eye on Amazon Prime. Perfect I thought…I didn’t know anything about it and had never heard of it.

WHICH IS EXACTLY HOW YOU SHOULD WATCH IT. And that is why this review will feature very little of the plot, storyline or in-depth look at the movie or the characters. Here is all I can tell you:

It is a Slasher type Horror Action Suspense Film.

The Movie Stars The Lady and The Demon.

The movie is broken into six chapters and an epilogue, in this order:

Chapter 3: “Can You Help Me, Please?”

Chapter 5: “Here, Kitty, Kitty…”

Chapter 1: “Mister Snuffles” (Mister Snuffleupagus)

Chapter 4: “The Mountain People”

Chapter 2: “The Electric Lady”

Chapter 6: “Who’s Gary Gilmore?”

Epilogue.

The Movie starts like this:

SHOT ENTIRELY ON 35MM FILM

(IN BLACK AND WHITE) A man and a woman in a truck on a rainy night in front of a motel………… she asks, “So I have to ask you a question, are you a serial killer?”

Between 2018 and 2020, the most prolific and unique American Serial Killer of the 21st Century went on a calculated, multi-state spree that began in Denver, Colorado, continued through Grand Lake, and expanded across Wyoming and Central Idaho before culminating in the dense forest of Hood River County, Oregon.

Drawing from police interviews, detailed accounts of eyewitnesses, depositions, and observations of various law enforcement, this is a dramatization of the true story of the final known killings in that rampage….

Then there is a killer (Pun intended) car chase…and then a woman is running in the woods from a killer, blood dripping from her wounds……as an acoustic cover of Love Hurts by Nazareth plays in the background……..

Love hurts, love scarsLove wounds and marksAny heartNot tough or strong enoughTo take a lot of pain, take a lot of painLove is like a cloudHolds a lot of rainLove hurtsOoh, ooh, love hurts

Some fools think of happinessBlissfulness, togethernessSome fools fool themselves, I guessThey’re not foolin’ me
Ooh, ooh, love hurts

AND WE START THE MOVIE WITH:
Chapter 3: “Can You Help Me, Please?”

I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this Horrifying piece of Cinematic Slasher Art.
Willa Fitzgerald reminds me of Mia Goth in Pearl.
Kyle Gallner is creepy scary as the nice guy?
JT Mollner I am unfamiliar with but will keep an eye out for.
Turn out the lights, crank up the soundtrack and enjoy the ride…
because that is what it is.
