NO RULES. NO REGRETS. JUST VICTORY

Henry Cavill stars as Major Gus March-Phillips who is brought out of Military Prison by Brigadier Colin Gubbins “M” and Ian Fleming late 1941 in England during World War II. He is tasked with heading Operation Postmaster, a last resort mission dreamt up by Winston Churchill, “M” and Ian. An unsanctioned secret operation to go to the Spanish island of Fernando Po in Africa, where the Nazi’s are resupplying their U-boats that are decimating the Royal Navy fleet, and destroy the resupply ships.

Accompanied by Irishman Henry Hayes(Hero Fiennes Tiffin), Freddy “The Buzz” “Frogman” Alvarez(Henry Golding), and “The Danish Hammer” Anders Lassen(Alan Ritchson), they sail around the coast of Africa to La Palma Canary Islands where they storm a Nazi Garrison and extract Geoffrey Appleyard(Alex Pettyfer). They then continue on the Swedish fishing Trawler Maid Of Honor to the Spanish port of Fernando Po to destroy the Nazi resupply ships. A suicide mission fraught with  perils and unexpected twists and turns. They sail between the British Navy ships on one side who will incarcerate them and the Nazi U-boats on the other that will kill them.

This is based on the true story of the first Black Ops before there was such a thing. The beginnings of Agencies like the Navy Seals, CIA and other world agencies that were spawned to do the dirty work under the radar. Gus March-Phillips was the inspiration for James Bond in Ian Flemings novels. Sir Christopher Lee who starred in and was a consultant on numerous James Bond movies, was a member of The Ministry Of Gentlemanly Warfare in it’s early days. He was also second cousin to Ian Fleming.

Cavill delivers his most charismatic performance since The Man from U.N.C.L.E., channeling that mustached grit with Guy Ritchie flair, while his co-stars, like a sharp-shooting Eiza González and the ever-reliable Alan Ritchson, match his energy beat for beat. Christopher Lee’s nod to real history adds gravitas, reminding us these men and women changed the course of history.

A thrilling blend of fact, legend, and adrenaline-fueled storytelling, this is one of the best True Story war films of recent years. These men and women helped change the course of history. It’s a fantastic story well told and portrayed by all involved in this movie. I love the True Story Movies and I love this one.

A great adventure!

Well done and highly recommended!

Two Thumbs Up!

Directed by: Leigh Whannell

Starring:  Christopher AbbottJulia Garner, and Sam Jaeger.

What If Someone You Love Became Something Else?

Blake Lovell (Christopher Abbott), a writer struggling with anger and estrangement from his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger, receives news that his long-lost father is officially declared dead, along with the keys to his remote childhood home in Oregon. Hoping for a fresh start and to mend family bonds, he takes his wife and daughter deep into the woods, only to find himself caught in a living nightmare. The family’s arrival coincides with reports of a mysterious creature rumored to stalk the wilderness, and during their trip, they are attacked by this beast, forcing them to barricade themselves inside an isolated farmhouse as night falls.

As the terror unfolds, Blake is injured and begins to exhibit strange symptoms, heightened senses, loss of speech, and a disturbing physical transformation. The claustrophobic tension in the farmhouse grows as Charlotte and Ginger watch Blake’s condition deteriorate, heightening the family’s fear and desperation. The monster continues to prowl outside, trying relentlessly to break in, while the family scrambles for safety, confronting both the external threat and the growing unpredictability of Blake himself. Desperate to escape, Charlotte attempts to flee with Ginger, but the creature forces them back into hiding. As Blake’s transformation accelerates, hair sprouting, fangs and claws emerging, his humanity fades, and he becomes a danger to his own family.

The general consensus of the movie and the people in that area is that it was a virus that infected the human and caused it to be “werewolf”-like. The movie and the story really veered off the typical Werewolf-wolfman theme. It was more of a virus infects man with some serious family issues story. Branded as a “re-Boot” of The Wolfman Franchise, it was more of a horror movie with a virus gone rogue. I am a huge fan of the original Monster Movies; Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman, etc. and the one thing that bugs me about “remakes’ or “re-boots” is not following the story. Changing the story so much that it no longer resembles the original. Nosferatu is a great example of a remake that follows the original closely, they just updated the effects using the latest film technology. Invisible Man (Leigh Whannell also directed that movie) is another one that strayed from the original story although I did like that movie.

Universal Studios “Re-boot” of The Wolf Man takes a very different approach compared to the beloved 1941 original and other werewolf films over the decades. While the original focused on the tragic figure of Larry Talbot, a man cursed by supernatural means and transformed under the full moon, 2025’s version centers on Blake Lovell and treats lycanthropy less as a mythical curse and more like a horrific infection, spread by a cut rather than a bite. This new film sets its action in the present day, using a single dread-filled night to ramp up tension, unlike the original and the 2010 remake, which unfolded over longer periods and leaned more heavily into gothic, supernatural tales. Blake’s transformation is also less hairy and exaggerated; the werewolf retains more human features, making him look visibly “caught” between man and beast, which differs sharply from the completely monstrous, animalistic look of earlier versions.

Comparing Wolf Man (2025) to other werewolf films like An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, or even the 2010 Wolfman remake starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, it stands out as more grounded with much less emphasis on supernatural legends, silver bullets, or dramatic transformation sequences. The movie avoids mystical explanations, focusing instead on body horror and emotional breakdown within a family, which is a clear departure from the magical invincibility and tragic grandeur of its predecessors. This approach made the story and the film lack the scares, heart, and bold visual flair that made past werewolf movies iconic.

It moved kind of slow and it was pretty much a disappointment for me. I was expecting the classic wolfman/werewolf story and that’s not what this is. So you might like it based on it’s own merits, but if you are expecting a remake of the classics, like I was, you won’t like it.

Watch at your own risk……..

Love is A Journey Worth Taking

THE BOOK:

The Map That Leads To You: A Novel By J. P. Monninger – August 5, 2025

Two strangers take the road less traveled…

Heather Mulgrew’s world is already mapped out: she is going to travel abroad with her friends after college, come back to a great career in September, and head into a life where not much is left to chance. But that was before an encounter on an overnight train introduces her to Jack, a passionate adventurer who changes the course of her journey and her life.

Throwing Heather’s careful itinerary to the wind, they follow Jack’s grandfather’s journal through post-World War II era Europe: Vienna, Budapest, Turkey―exotic places that serve only to heighten their feelings. As September looms, Jack urges Heather to stay with him, to keep traveling, to give in to the romance of their experience; Heather convinces him to return to the United States.
Jack has a secret that could change everything. And Heather’s world is about to be shaken to the core.

FROM AMAZON MGM STUDIOS:

The Map That Leads to You follows Heather (Cline), a young woman setting off on an adventure across Europe with her best friends before settling into her perfectly planned life. When she crosses paths with Jack (Apa), a magnetic and mysterious stranger, their instant spark ignites an emotional journey neither of them expected. As their connection deepens, secrets, life choices, and hidden truths will test their bond—and change her life in ways she never imagined. From director Lasse Hallström (Dear John, Safe Haven) comes this adaptation of JP Monninger’s novel about love, destiny, and the courage to choose your own path.

From the start there’s no doubt Heather likes her ducks neatly in a row. Smart, curious and independent, she is the planner – the one who reads the guidebooks, coordinates the train schedules, makes the reservations and always prepares a cushion for anything that might go astray. Case in point: Heather organized this trip to hit all the major checkpoints and, more importantly, to conclude a requisite two weeks before moving into an apartment in New York City and starting her new job at a prestigious bank. That may be why her friends, though they tease about her meticulous nature, have long accepted it as part of Heather’s personality and what they love about her. Besides, without her on this trip they’d probably end up sleeping in the park and they know it. Amy, for one, has a tough time keeping track of her own passport.

Jack is more of a wild card, whose philosophy on the road is, “We’ll figure it out.” Confident and resourceful, he may have a goal in mind but the details of how he gets from point A to point B can remain vague until the moment they become necessary and he’s not averse to bending the rules.  As Apa explains, “Jack is a traveler. He is smart, spontaneous and looking for adventure. He is always looking for the story behind the story. He cares for people and understands the fragility of life, which is why he prefers to experience life up close and in the moment, not on his phone or on social media.”

Heather and Jack’s contrast is instantly and comically apparent as they exit the train: she’s herding luggage and he’s hands-free, only a well-worn backpack on his shoulders. Despite his sunny nature and playful nature, however, Jack also strikes a subtle note of intrigue and may be harboring a secret he’s not ready – if ever – to share.

It is soon revealed that Jack is retracing an itinerary from a journal passed down to him from his great-grandfather, Russell, a veteran of the Second World War. After nearly losing his life on the battlefield, Russell set off on a post-war tour of personal discovery, visiting points of interest throughout the continent and describing them in this book. These are the places that Jack now wants to see for himself. At first, Jack’s trip appears to be a way of honoring Russell’s life, but as the young man continues to follow in his great-grandfather’s footsteps it becomes something deeper. Russell embarked on his journey after resolving not to waste another minute of his precious life. For Jack, that commitment becomes clearer and more meaningful with every step. And it’s something he strives to share with this extraordinary new woman in his life.

THE REVIEW:

I have not read the book so I can’t draw comparisons there, I will have to judge the movie on it’s own merits. In the beginning it felt a little generic, like a formula Hallmark movie. To be honest I was losing interest quick but the chemistry between the three girlfriends early on started to draw me in. They are definitely a close knit bunch of friends who share everything. As the movie meandered around Europe it still felt pretty generic to me, I wasn’t really getting drawn into the characters emotionally. I really didn’t think much of KJ Apa, again his performance didn’t feel that deep emotionally. Madelyn Cline I though did alright with her role but I feel like it was less than, kind of like a generic Hallmark movie.

I honestly liked Madison Thompson the best out of three girls on the trip. I felt like her character felt the most real to me, although I liked Sofia Wylie as well. Of the Romance movies I have seen and reviewed lately: My Oxford Year, The Life List and The Idea Of You I would have to say that this movie doesn’t compare, again it feels more like a generic Hallmark Movie that you just don’t get that heavily emotionally involved in. Maybe it has more to do with direction than the acting. I just looked back at what I wrote and I have typed “Generic Hallmark Movie” three times.

I think that really sums it up for me, not that good, it was just ok.

Would I watch it again, absolutely not. Would I recommend it, absolutely not.

There are better Romance Movies out there.
