10×10 (2018) – Review

Cathy (Kelly Reilly) is days away from opening her own business, a flower shop, when she is attacked by a man named Lewis (Luke Evans) in a grocery store parking lot. He gags her, zip-ties her hands and feet, and throws her in the trunk of his car. He then takes her to his secluded house and imprisons her in a soundproof and padded 10×10 foot room he built specifically for her.

While Cathy is terrified, she is also puzzled by his bizarre request for information. He wants to know her name. He leaves her alone for hours, returns, and asks the same question: “What is your name?” Every time she answers, he grows more volatile, claiming she is lying and leaves her to rot in the silence again. This goes on relentlessly until eventually Cathy starts to get restless and turns the tables on her abductor.

Which leads to some very dramatic twists and turns, and a lot of physical action, as Cathy tries to escape and Lewis lets his guard down. 10×10 is a tense power struggle between captor and captive that keeps you guessing as the roles start to switch. Kelly Reilly plays Cathy as incredibly resourceful, tough, and physically capable of giving her captor a run for his money, portraying a not so typical “Damsel in distress”. She gives you the impression that she is not what she seems to be from the very beginning.

Luke Evans portrays Lewis with a desperate and brutal energy, effectively conveying a man burdened by deep grief and a methodical, almost professional obsession with getting the truth out of Cathy. Luke and Kelly really sink their teeth into their roles, turning a thin script into a cat and mouse game on steroids. 10×10 is a masterclass in ‘less is more.’ What starts as a terrifying survival story quickly evolves into a complex, high-stakes game of revenge where you won’t know who to root for until the very end.

The tension is thick, the performances are electric, and the payoff is well worth the wait. I came across this on Netflix and thought I’d give it a watch. I am glad I did, if you haven’t seen it, you should give it a go. It is a thrilling ride watching these two battle it out!
