Mercy (2026) – Review

It’s 2029 in a Dystopian Los Angeles, California. It is the era of Big Brother, there are cameras everywhere. Your cell phones, social media interactions and every movement you make are documented and fed into a a massive database computer system. In order to combat the growing crime and lawlessness, a new Justice system was implemented, replacing the traditional legal system. The Mercy Court is now the new standard for justice in dealing with crimes and punishment. Presided over by an AI judge, the accused sit strapped alone in a chair in the Mercy Courtroom facing the giant screen displaying the AI Judge. You have 90 minutes to prove your innocence or you will be executed by a lethal sonic wave.

This is where LAPD Officer Detective Chris Raven (Chris Pratt) wakes up and finds himself, strapped in the chair facing AI Judge Maddox (Rebecca Ferguson). She informs him of his rights, his charges, and that he has 90 minutes to prove his innocence or he will be executed. Protesting his innocence saying that he didn’t do anything, Judge Maddox explains to Chris that he is guilty of killing his wife, and his 90 minutes to clear his name start now as she starts the countdown clock. She informs Chris that he has access to the entire database of recorded material on everyone and their actions by using the touchscreen in front of him.

Chris starts by having one of his Police partners, who is live on the murder scene at his house, walk him through looking for clues. Chris frantically thinks of every possible scenario and tracks down his wife’s movements and activities over the last couple of days. They were having marital problems due to Chris falling off the wagon and it appears she was seeing another man. That discovery leads to more and more clues in different directions as Chris frantically searches for the truth against the ticking countdown clock.

It is a Dystopian AI powered whodunnit with Big Brother High Tech involved in everyone’s lives. There is no place to hide, or is there? Is the Mercy AI system failsafe? Will Chris clear himself or will he be executed trying? Is it possible that the new Mercy system could wrongfully execute an innocent man? Tune in next week when…just kidding, I couldn’t resist. Chris Pratt did a great job of acting alone, strapped in a chair playing off of Rebecca Ferguson on a big screen. That had to have been a challenge to pull off convincingly. Was I convinced, eh not so much.

The Beginning of the movie moved really slow, it was almost boring. It was really tedious watching Chris talk to a screen and swipe at a screen looking for video evidence. The storyline and plot were a little all over the place, kind of like swiss cheese (Full of holes). There really wasn’t a lot of action until the end and that was pretty predictable and a little hokey. It is a great premise and I think it could have been a really exciting taut Sci-Fi Thriller. But the execution in this production was off and instead felt like a Sci-Fi B-movie quickly forgotten. I am assuming that would fall on Timur Bekmambetov‘s directing. Don’t get me wrong, it was alright but I can’t recommend it. No Mercy.
