The Family Plan (2023) – Review

Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg) appears to be the ultimate suburban Dad—a devoted husband, a successful car salesman in Buffalo, and a father of three who avoids social media and technology at all costs. However, his quiet life is a carefully constructed lie. Decades earlier, he was Sean, an elite government assassin. When a stray photo of him is posted online, his former employer, McCaffrey (CiarĆ”n Hinds), tracks him down, sending a hitman to attack him while he is grocery shopping with his infant son.

Realizing his cover is blown, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan), son Kyle (Van Crosby), and daughter Nina (Zoe Colletti) into the family minivan for a spontaneous, “tech-free” road trip to Las Vegas. Under the guise of a fun family vacation, he is actually racing to meet a former contact to secure new identities for everyone. Along the way, the family bonds over car sing-alongs and stops at college campuses, while Dan secretly fends off waves of assassins without his family ever realizing they are in mortal danger.

The tension culminates in Las Vegas, where Dan’s past finally catches up to him in front of his family. After a series of explosive confrontations at a high-end hotel, his family is forced to reconcile their image of a boring “minivan dad” with the reality of his lethal skills. Ultimately, they must join forces to take down McCaffrey’s team. By the end, the Morgans embrace a new, more adventurous version of their lives together, proving that family is their most effective backup plan.

While it wasn’t quite the family movie I thought it would be, it wasn’t the action comedy I thought it would be either. It was alright but soon forgettable. It’s a familiar premise that has been executed more effectively in the past. True Lies, Back In Action , Role Play and Nobody to name a few. I would have to say The Family Plan falls at the tail end of that line-up. NobodyĀ and Back In Action definitely did this storyline better in my opinion. Some of the humor was clichĆ©, it was also a little ridiculous watching Mark dodging bullets with a baby strapped to his chest.

There is a scene later in Las Vegas where there is an automatic weapons gunfight in the street. Literally crawling with tourists and yet nobody gets shot. Ridiculous. And that’s pretty much how all of it went, I mean it was ok, but again, quickly forgettable. And now on to the sequel, The Family Plan 2, we’ll see if it is any better.
