Nobody (2021) – Review

Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is Nobody, just a suburban Dad in Chicago raising a family and working 9 to 5. He’s the guy who takes out the trash, fixes the sink, and nods politely at neighbors. He works as an Auditor for his Father-in-law’s manufacturing business, while his wife Becca Mansell (Connie Nielson) is a successful Realtor running her own business. They have two kids, their teenage son Brady (Gage Munroe), and young daughter Sammy (Paisley Cadorath). When the FBI agent asks Hutch, “Who the hell are you?” Hutch replies, “Me, I’m Nobody.”

Which leads us to why Hutch is looking so beat up and sitting in handcuffs being interrogated by the FBI. The Mansell Family was having a typical Monday at the beginning of a typical week, when Hutch was awakened that evening by a noise downstairs. He quietly goes downstairs and finds two masked intruders with a gun. His son Brady sneaks downstairs and tackles one of them, but Hutch seems reluctant to engage and asks the robbers to leave. Everyone, Hutch’s family, the police and his coworkers can’t believe that Hutch did nothing to stop them and let them go.

The next day when Sammy tells Hutch her “Kitty Kat bracelet” is missing and was in the bowl of change that the robbers took, it’s too much for Hutch to handle and he storms out of the house. He goes to see his father David Mansell (Christopher Lloyd) at his retirement home and gets his Father’s old FBI ID and gun, telling his Dad, “There’s something I have to do.” To which David replies, “You better go do it then.” Hutch goes to Tattoo Parlors all over the city looking for the tattoo he saw on one of the robbers arms. When one of the owners notices his ID is twenty years old, and it isn’t Hutch in the picture, things get a little tense.

An old timer sitting there notices the tattoo on the inside of Hutch’s wrist. It is a seven of spades and a two of diamonds, representing the worst starting hand in Texas Hold’em Poker. The old-timer, who is a veteran and recognizes the tattoo, thanks Hutch for his service and promptly leaves. It is a calling card, the tattoo signifies that Hutch is the “Bad Hand”- the most dangerous, underestimated, and unluckiest person for an enemy to deal with, implying he can win despite impossible odds. The tattoo acts as a signal to other professionals (like the veteran in the tattoo parlor) that Hutch has a background in extreme, covert violence.

Nobody, it turns out, is somebody lethal and very experienced at what he does. Things turn quickly from a quiet suburban Dad looking for his daughters bracelet, to taking on the most ruthless Russian Mob boss’s crew in Chicago. Joined by his retired Dad and his brother Harry Mansell (RZA), the fireworks and carnage rival any seen in The Equalizer, The Accountant, John Wick or Taken as Hutch burns it all down over a “Kitty Kat Bracelet.” Bob Odenkirk is thoroughly convincing as Hutch, caught between being the quiet suburban Dad and the violent no holds-barred man with a very special set of skills.

I love this movie, it grows on you very quick. It was great to see Christopher Lloyd as the rough and tumble grandpa eager to join in the fun. RZA as Harry showed us his own style of ruthlessness and swagger. At 92 minutes, it flies by as you become completely engrossed in Hutch’s underdog persona and mission, protecting his family. I went back and watched this before Nobody 2, never having seen it. I am glad I did, and after watching both of them I can say I am ready for Nobody 3! Highly recommended for your Streaming Movie Night, I would watch this before Nobody 2 as the sequel picks up right where this one ends.
