Idris Elba Battles the Ocean Depths in Lionsgate’s Sci-Fi Survival Thriller ‘Above The Below’

Lionsgate has pulled back the curtain on one of the most intense, high-concept sci-fi thrillers left on the 2026 calendar. A batch of six brand-new, exclusive production stills have dropped for Above The Below, giving us our first glimpse at a project that marks a massive milestone: the feature-film directorial debut of Idris Elba.

Elba, who pulls double duty by co-directing alongside Martin Owen and starring as the main lead, is delivering a claustrophobic, ticking-clock nightmare that is scheduled to hit theaters on Friday, December 4, 2026.

Written by the screenwriting trio of Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent, Above The Below begins with a routine space mission that turns into an absolute catastrophe.

When three astronauts survive a harrowing, fiery re-entry and crash-land from orbit, their capsule misses land entirely, plunging straight into the ocean. The trio finds themselves trapped inside their sealed capsule as it sinks into the crushing depths of the sea.

With oxygen rapidly running out, every single breath becomes a finite resource. The crew is forced into a brutal race against time, facing impossible, heart-wrenching choices over who will risk everything to breach the surface and who must be left behind in the dark.

Alongside Elba, the images showcase a star-studded cast of survivors, including Hero Fiennes Tiffin (Young Sherlock) and Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex).

Above The Below crashes into theaters December 4, 2026!
