A24’s Record-Breaking Horror Smash ‘Backrooms’ debuts on HBO Max This Friday!
The most talked about horror phenomenon of the year is finally making its way to the small screen. HBO Max has officially announced that A24’s record-shattering blockbuster Backrooms (2026) will make its exclusive streaming premiere this Friday, September 25, 2026.
Initially launching in theaters over the summer, the film grossed a staggering $396.5 million worldwide, officially dethroning Marty Supreme to become the highest-grossing film in A24’s studio history.
Directed by 21-year-old visual effects prodigy Kane Parsons and penned by Will Soodik, the feature-length adaptation expands on Parsons’ viral Kane Pixels YouTube universe. The plot centers on a strange, liminal doorway that inexplicably manifests in the damp basement of a local furniture showroom.
Academy Award nominee Chotel Ejiofor stars as the store’s desperate owner, who finds himself trapped inside an endless, maddening network of interconnected, yellow-walled office spaces where linear time bends and reality completely breaks down.
The film crosscuts his harrowing survival with deep psychological evaluation sessions overseen by Dr. Mary Kline, played by Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World). The powerhouse ensemble cast is rounded out by Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.
Backrooms will be available to stream exclusively for all HBO Max subscribers in the United States starting Friday, September 25, 2026.
