Johnny Depp is Completely Unrecognizable as Scrooge in New ‘Ebenezer’ Featurette
Paramount Pictures has released a spectacular new behind-the-scenes featurette for Ebenezer, the highly anticipated gothic reimagining of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Directed by acclaimed horror icon Ti West (X, Pearl, MaXXIne), the film is looking to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the fall when it hits theaters next month on Friday, November 13, 2026.
The brand-new “Johnny Depp is Ebenezer” featurette pulls back the curtain on the film’s practical special effects, detailing Depp’s jaw-dropping, terrifying physical transformation into literature’s greatest holiday miser.
Vanishing in the Makeup Chair
To bring a grim, authentic grit to 1840s Victorian London, Ti West enlisted two-time Academy Award-winning prosthetic designer Barrie Gower (House of the Dragon, The Last of Us). The featurette reveals that Johnny Depp was completely hands-on during the design process, spending hours collaborating in the workshop.
At Depp’s personal request, the team crafted extensive facial prosthetics to alter his structure—including a lengthened chin, a sharply hawkish prosthetic nose, and heavily textured skin blemishes and moles. Combined with a stringy, thinning white hair piece, a severe scowl, and weathered period wardrobe, the actor is completely masked.
Co-star Tramell Tillman (who plays the Ghost of Christmas Present) admits in the video that when Depp first walked onto the set in full character, the cast didn’t even realize it was him.
A Mischievous Miser
Despite Scrooge’s cold, miserable, and grouchy disposition, the creative team teases that Depp infuses the iconic character with a unique layer of theatrical flair. Director Ti West notes that even beneath layers of heavy silicone, Depp manages to project a distinct, slightly mischievous twinkle in his eyes that redefines Scrooge’s internal malice.
The featurette also offers fleeting glimpses of the film’s stellar supporting cast in action, including Rupert Grint as a beautifully weary Bob Cratchit, alongside Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, and Ian McKellen.
Ebenezer comes to theaters November 13, 2026.
