Andrew Scott Delivers a Heartbreaking, Mighty Performance in First Trailer for Focus Features’ TIFF-Winner ‘Elsinore’

The autumn awards race has officially found its emotional crown jewel. Following its high-profile International People’s Choice Award victory at the Toronto International Film Festival, Focus Features has unleashed the first trailer and production stills for Elsinore (2026).

Helmed by acclaimed theater and film director Simon Stone (The Dig) and penned by BAFTA-winner Stephen Beresford (Pride), the biographical drama runs 1 hour and 51 minutes and maps an elegant, deeply protective circle around one of the British stage’s most legendary, tragic chapters.

The film stars a transformed, unblinking Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers, Fleabag) as Ian Charleson, the immensely gifted Scottish actor best known to global moviegoers for his leading role in Chariots of Fire.

The movie focuses on late 1989 when, facing his own immediate mortality following a severe HIV/AIDS diagnosis, Charleson makes the defiant, courageous decision to keep his illness entirely secret from the public while taking on the monumental, punishing title role of Hamlet at London’s National Theatre.

The trailer highlights the immense physical and mental toll of the production, crosscutting Charleson’s grueling rehearsal steps with the fierce medical resistance of his personal physician, Dr. Margaret Johnson, played by Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite).

Rather than framing Charleson as a passive victim, Beresford’s script treats the stage itself as a battlefield of pure preservation, where reciting Shakespeare’s lines on “to be or not to be” transforms into a visceral, glorious celebration of quality of life, joy, and raw theatrical legacy.

To fill out the backstage community at London’s South Bank, Stone has assembled a phenomenal collection of top-tier talent. The elite cast features Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn as Richard, Joe Locke, Luke Thompson, David Dawson, Matthew Beard, Monica Dolan, Juliet Stevenson, and Peter Mullan. Charleson tragically passed away in January 1990, a mere eight weeks after his historic final curtain call.

Elsinore will debut exclusively in select premium theaters on Friday, November 20, 2026, before branching out into wide domestic markets over the Thanksgiving holiday corridor.
