Amid controversy Bleecker Street bumps up release date for Musk Documentary

Alex Gibney’s powerhouse four-hour documentary Musk officially unveiled its highly anticipated first look trailer following a massive four-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival!

The trailer features direct interviews with Tesla’s original founders, tech critics, and Musk’s first wife, Justine. The trailer’s debut instantly ignited a firestorm, with major social media platforms like TikTok, Meta, and YouTube reportedly rejecting or restricting paid promotional ads for the film, while Elon Musk himself took to X to bash the director as a “bitter old man.”

Representatives for the platforms initially justified the ban by claiming the trailer violated strict guidelines regarding political content, citing brief footage of a political rally. Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk’s own platform, X, also rejected the advertisements amid public legal threats from Musk’s personal legal team, who labeled the film a hit piece.

However, following a massive public outcry over potential corporate suppression and censorship, several of the Big Tech platforms began backtracking. Within twenty-four hours of the initial ban making headlines, both Meta and YouTube reversed their decisions.

A spokesperson for Meta blamed the restriction on an error and confirmed they are actively restoring the ads, while YouTube released a statement clarifying that the trailer had been cleared to run after a formal system review. TikTok and X have yet to lift their advertising restrictions.

With public curiosity heavily stoked by the censorship battle, Bleecker Street has officially fast-tracked the film’s theatrical debut, moving the rollout up to October 9, 2026.
