Apex (2026) is a Netflix survival-thriller starring Charlize Theron as Sasha, a grieving woman and adrenaline-seeking rock climber who travels to the remote Australian wilderness—specifically Wandarra National Park—to test her limits and find solace following her husband’s death. Her journey turns into a harrowing nightmare when she is ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a ruthless, psychopathic predator named Ben, played by Taron Egerton.
Ben, who views himself as a hunter rather than a killer, initiates a “hunt” by stealing Sasha’s gear and giving her a head start of exactly one song’s duration before pursuing her with a crossbow. Sasha must use her elite climbing skills and raw survival instincts to navigate treacherous terrain, including sheer cliffs and river rapids, to outsmart her Ben. The film has been described by Netflix Tudum as a blend of Free Solo and The Silence of the Lambs, emphasizing a deep psychological struggle alongside high-octane physical survival.
Apex was directed by Baltasar Kormákur, written by Jeremy Robbins, and stars Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana.
Apex was filmed on location in the rugged wilderness of New South Wales, Australia. Production heavily utilized the iconic Blue Mountains, with specific scenes shot at: The Needles, Glenbrook Gorge, Jelly Bean Pool and Sydney.
True to her reputation as a dedicated action star, Charlize Theron performed nearly all of her own stunts, describing the experience as a “miracle” that she survived.
- Rock Climbing: Despite having no prior experience (other than climbing trees as a child), Theron trained for months with legendary pro climber Beth Rodden. She became so proficient that she filmed most of the mountain scenes herself—often barefoot on “raw feet” to capture the character’s desperation.
- Kayaking: Theron admitted that kayaking was her biggest challenge, despite being a strong swimmer. She underwent intense training to handle whitewater rapids, though some of the most dangerous class-level rapids were filmed in a controlled artificial river.
- Physical Toll: The production was grueling, requiring the cast and crew to hike their own gear for over two hours to reach remote gorge locations. Theron sustained several injuries during filming, including a fractured toe and an elbow injury that required two surgeries.
Taron Egerton underwent a massive transformation to play the film’s “cunning killer,” Ben, adopting a shaved head and a gritty Australian accent. Unlike his typical “hero” roles in Kingsman or Rocketman, Egerton described his character as a sociopath who doesn’t see himself as a killer, but as a “hunter looking for his next target”. To achieve a “shredded” and athletic look that Charlize Theron admitted she felt she couldn’t “overpower,” Egerton trained up to seven days a week.
- The Routine: His trainer, Walsh, combined heavy weightlifting with daily high-intensity interval training (HIIT), boxing circuits, and functional movements.
- The Diet: He fueled his transformation with six structured meals a day, focused on lean proteins like chicken and rice, though he briefly used a high-calorie “bulk” phase to add muscle quickly.
- Stunts: He performed many of his own stunts, including a terrifying free fall on a wire that he admitted left him “petrified” until he heard the crew’s applause.
