“Come on in… You see how this looks, right? At the end of the day, a man must be held accountable for the decisions that he makes. Do you agree?”
In November 2004, Dateline NBC aired a hidden-camera investigation segment into online predators that laid the groundwork for what would officially become To Catch a Predator in 2005. Dateline correspondent Chris Hansen had become aware of an independent, volunteer watchdog group called Perverted-Justice operating online. Volunteers from the group posed as minors (typically ages 11ā15) in early-2000s chatrooms on platforms like AOL, Yahoo!, and MySpace. They would log explicit conversations with adult men who believed they were talking to children.
Chris Hansen realized that if NBC provided the resources to wire physical locations with hidden cameras, they could bring these digital chats into the real world. NBC would rent suburban homes in various states, wiring them completely with hidden microphones and cameras. Adults who naturally looked much younger than their actual age were hired to act as the “minor” meeting the target. They would greet the arriving men, offer them a snack, and then step into another room. Instead of the decoy returning, Chris Hansen would step out from the shadows holding a printout of the man’s online chat logs.
The show was called To Catch A Predator and had a very successful run from 2004 to 2007. The show was abruptly canceled in 2007 after an intense Texas sting operation ended in the tragic suicide of an Assistant District Attorney as police and TV cameras swarmed his house. NBC faced major lawsuits, massive advertiser backlash, and serious questions about whether “vigilante reality TV” had gone way too far.
This exact moral grey area and explosive rise-and-fall is the plot of A24’s upcoming thrillerĀ PRIMETIME, hitting theaters in September 2026.
