Apple’s Everest Epic ‘Tenzing’ Mountaineers Into your Living Room Friday!
Get ready for an awe-inspiring, real-life adventure from the comfort of your couch! This Friday, October 16, 2026, Apple Original Films will debut Tenzing on Apple TV, delivering a stunning cinematic account of the first successful summit of Mount Everest.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Peedom (Sherpa, Mountain), the project breathes thrilling life into the legendary 1953 expedition.
To capture the sheer scale and peril of the environment, the production famously prioritized absolute authenticity, shooting on real mountain ranges across Nepal and New Zealand.
Tenzing focuses on Tenzing Norgay (played by newcomer Genden Phuntsok), exploring his spiritual calling to “Chomolungma” (the sacred mother goddess of the mountain).
Phuntsok meticulously prepared for the role, trekking toward Everest Base Camp while practicing Sherpa dialect for hours a day to anchor the film’s cultural truth.
The dramatic journey relies on a powerful dynamic between two legendary figures and the colonial framework surrounding them:
- Tom Hiddleston stars as New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, portraying a fellow outsider bound to Tenzing by deep mutual trust.
- Willem Dafoe steps in as Colonel John Hunt, the rigid British team leader who must be persuaded that Tenzing is meant for the main climbing team.
- Caitríona Balfe (Outlander) plays expedition secretary Jill Henderson, a vital ally who fights alongside Tenzing’s wife, Dawa (Thinley Lhamo), to secure his rightful spot on the final team.
Following an acclaimed world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Tenzing landed in select theaters last weekend before starting its worldwide streaming release on Apple TV this Friday, October 16, 2026.
