Lionsgate dropped the first movie still from the upcoming Mel Gibson film The Resurrection Of The Christ. Part One and Part Two are Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated biblical epic sequels to his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.

Principal photography for both parts of The Resurrection of the Christ has officially wrapped having been concluded ahead of schedule, lasting 134 days of active shooting over a roughly seven-month window, after cameras began rolling on October 6, 2025.

Mel Gibson shot the two-part epic entirely across Italy, utilizing the same historic and cinematic atmosphere that defined the 2004 original. Outdoor and architectural scenes were shot throughout ancient southern Italian towns, including Matera, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, and Brindisi. The primary production base was stationed at Rome’s iconic Cinecittà Studios.

Lionsgate shifted the theatrical target windows due to a mix of creative vision adjustments and specific holiday branding:

  • The Full Recast Decision: While early production drafts considered bringing back original stars like Jim Caviezel and digitally de-aging them, the team ultimately opted to completely recast the film. This choice was driven by exorbitant digital de-aging CGI costs and scheduling conflicts. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen takes over the role of Jesus, which required a completely clean production runway.
  • Thematic Holiday Alignment: The original schedule aimed to drop Part One on Good Friday (March 26, 2027). Lionsgate intentionally delayed Part One to May 6, 2027, and pushed Part Two out a full year to May 25, 2028. This move ensures both installments premier exactly on Ascension Day in their respective years—the Christian holiday celebrating Jesus’s ascension into heaven—tying the films directly to their core thematic subject matter.
  • Ambitious Narrative Scope: The scale of the project expanded significantly. Mel Gibson is crafting a highly metaphysical, non-linear storyline that delves heavily into the spiritual realms, the “Harrowing of Hell,” and the three days between the crucifixion and the resurrection. Safely navigating this complex post-production phase necessitated a more generous editing schedule
