The Social Reckoning (2026) – First Look!

The Social Reckoning is an upcoming American biographical drama thriller written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on October 9, 2026, by Sony Pictures Releasing. Serving as a standalone sequel and thematic companion piece to the 2010 Oscar-winning film The Social Network, the film shifts from the platform’s Ivy League origins to its modern-day controversies.

Sorkin’s original screenplay is based on the events that gave rise to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking exposé The Facebook Files. The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets, exposing its impact on teenage mental health, misinformation, and global political violence.

The film features a brand-new ensemble cast, with none of the original 2010 actors reprising their roles. Notably, Jesse Eisenberg declined to return, leading to a major character recasting for the Meta CEO:
  • Mikey Madison as Frances Haugen, the core Facebook whistleblower.
  • Jeremy Allen White as Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter.
  • Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg, stepping into the role as a hardened, “free-speech absolutist” version of the tech mogul.
  • Wunmi Mosaku
  • Betty Gilpin
  • Billy Magnussen
  • Bill Burr
Jesse Eisenberg explicitly declined to reprise his Oscar-nominated role as Mark Zuckerberg, prompting writer-director Aaron Sorkin to recast the part. Sorkin reportedly spent three full days trying to persuade Eisenberg to return, feeling the role inherently belonged to him.

Eisenberg turned down the blockbuster sequel for two major reasons:

  • Dislike of the Real Zuckerberg: Over the last 15 years, Eisenberg developed a highly negative opinion of the real-world tech mogul’s actions and didn’t want his likeness associated with him anymore.
  • The Airport Annoyance: The actor admitted he grew incredibly tired of fans approaching him in public and at airports, handing him merchandise and business cards to sign with the infamous line, “I’m CEO, Bitch”.
