Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott) is a recently widowed crime writer who has relocated to the town of Featherbank with his young son, Jake (Acston Luca Porto), seeking a fresh start. The town, however, holds a dark history. Decades earlier, a notorious serial killer nicknamed “The Whisper Man” terrorized the area by whispering at children’s windows before abducting them.
When Jake mysteriously vanishes from his home under identical circumstances, Tom is forced to reconcile with his estranged father, Detective Inspector Pete Willis (Robert De Niro). Willis is the retired investigator who originally captured and jailed the original killer, and he must now use his dark historical knowledge to help find his missing grandson.
Michelle Monaghan co-stars as Detective Amanda Beck, the lead officer navigating the modern-day investigation. Michael Keaton appears in a highly publicized but heavily guarded pivotal role central to the film’s psychological twists. The supporting cast features notable character actors including Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, John Carroll Lynch, and Will Brill.
The Whisper Man, produced by the Russo brothers’ AGBO banner, marks the first time the two Oscar-nominated actors Robert De Niro and Michael Keaton have shared the screen since Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown in 1997.
The film is helmed by New Zealand director James Ashcroft, known for his visceral, slow-burn tension in Coming Home in the Dark. The screenplay was adapted from Alex North’s 2019 bestseller The Whisper Man by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer (who co-wrote the 2017 horror blockbuster It).
Principal photography wrapped after a 42-day shoot across New Jersey. Film crews heavily utilized atmospheric, real-world locations in North Plainfield, Newark, Montclair, and Scotch Plains to build the fictional, dread-soaked town of Featherbank.
