Power Ballad Coming To Theaters Friday May 29, 2026!

Power Ballad starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas comes to select theaters this Friday May 29, 2026. Lionsgate brings the movie to all theaters the following Friday June 5, 2026.

Wedding singer Rick Power (Paul Rudd) is the charismatic lead singer of The Bride and Groove. While the band enjoys moderate success on Dublin’s local wedding circuit, Rick occasionally finds himself longing for his dreams of becoming a pop star—aspirations that were set aside 14 years ago when he and his wife, Rachel (Marcella Plunkett), welcomed their daughter Aja (Beth Fallon) into the world.

Rick’s dreams are reignited when the band plays a wedding where American pop star Danny Wilson (Nick Jonas) is a guest. Rick and Danny bond over their shared love of music, discovering passions within themselves that they thought were long gone. After an all-night jam session and many beers and shared stories later, Rick and Danny take turns playing music for each other while Danny is happily taking Rick’s suggested lyrical notes and feedback over the music Danny is currently writing. As the evening progresses, Rick plays “How to Write a Song” for Danny on the piano – a personal power ballad that Rick had written. Danny seemed very intrigued about the beautiful song. Rick shares that it’s for a special lady in his life, Danny assuming it was a love song for a partner. Before parting ways, Danny hands Rick his record label’s business card stating they could be in touch that way.

Upon his return home, Danny plays “How to Write a Song” for his girlfriend, Marcia (Havana Rose Liu), claiming that he wrote the song for her when she asked who it was written for. Danny proceeds to release the song as his own, jumpstarting his career and fueling anger and regret in Rick’s life as Rick discovers that he has been swindled. With much effort, Rick turns to his friend and family to relay that it was in fact Rick’s song he wrote and that Danny took it. No one seems to believe him. After unsuccessfully seeking legal help and unraveling in front of his family and friends, Rick sets out to the United States to confront Danny and gain the recognition that has eluded him for so long.

POWER BALLAD is the story of two artists chasing recognition, relevance, and the opportunity to prove themselves to the world. “How to Write a Song” represents much more than professional success to Rick and Danny – it becomes a defining marker in their parallel life journeys, draws connections to their loved ones, and provides an outlet for their repressed and unspeakable feelings. The true power of music lies in its ability to express what words alone cannot.
