The Book

Fifty Shades Of Grey (2015) is based on The Novel Fifty Shades Of Grey by E. L. James published June 11, 2011.

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Fifty Shades Of Grey (2015) – Review

Twenty-one-year-old Anastasia “Ana” Steele (Dakota Johnson) is an English literature major at Washington State University Vancouver in Vancouver, Washington. When her roommate, Kate Kavanagh (Eloise Mumford), catches a cold and is unable to interview Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), a twenty-seven-year-old billionaire entrepreneur, for the college newspaper, Ana agrees to take Kate’s place. At Christian’s Seattle headquarters, she stumbles her way through the meeting, and Christian is so intrigued by Ana he cancels his next meeting to talk with her more. Ana is also instantly mesmerized by the enigmatic Mr. Grey and his impeccable manners, breathtakingly good looks and obvious success.

After Christian tracks Ana down at her hardware store job, their mutual attraction deepens, leading to an unconventional relationship. However, Ana quickly learns that Christian has a dark side and is not interested in a standard courtship; he requires a signed non-disclosure agreement and a formal contract outlining a Master/Submissive relationship. As Ana is introduced to Christian’s Red Room of Pain, she is intrigued enough to allow herself to experience the dark sexual side of Christian and his BDSM world. They both fall deeper for each other as they explore the darker side of their sexuality.

Anastasia starts to become frustrated by the one-way street of their relationship. While the sex is adventurous and exciting, there is a growing absence of romance and real connection. At the same time, Christian is trying to mask his feelings for Ana behind his dark BDSM world, refusing to cross the line into Ana’s desire for a deeper, emotional connection to accompany the deep physical connection they are both experiencing. Will Christian be able to open up to Ana emotionally or will she give up and decide that the BDSM world and lack of emotional connection isn’t for her?

There are two things of importance to note here: I have never read the book(s) and I am a Dakota Johnson fan (with the exception of Madame Web). That being said, I hadn’t seen Fifty Shades of Grey until last night. I tried a couple of times but just wasn’t in the “Romance” movie frame of mind. Knowing they were leaving Netflix in less than a week, I decided that now was the time. I have to say that by the middle of the movie I was getting drawn into Ana and Christian’s very complex relationship and feelings for each other.

The chemistry between Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan felt very real and authentic. The tension of their relationship felt palpable, the intense physical scenes felt real, not forced. It was like I was a fly on the wall, watching these two fall for each other in real time. The drama of their different backgrounds and expectations for their relationship was captivating. In the end I was completely consumed with their story and was surprised when the movie ended, having been totally engrossed in it. So much so that I am looking forward to tonight and the sequel Fifty Shades Darker!
