But Ana knows that loving her Fifty Shades will not be easy, and that being together will pose challenges that neither of them would anticipate. Ana must somehow learn to share Christian’s opulent lifestyle without sacrificing her own identity. And Christian must overcome his compulsion to control as he wrestles with the demons of a tormented past.
Just when it seems that their strength together will eclipse any obstacle, misfortune, malice, and fate conspire to make Ana’s deepest fears turn to reality.
Fifty Shades Freed (2018) – Review
Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) have worked through the problems and troubles they encountered in Fifty Shades Darker, and are getting married. After the ceremony with their family and friends, they fly to Paris in Christian’s jet plane. After exploring Paris for a couple of days they fly to The French Riviera, then take Christian’s yacht to Monaco. It is a dream honeymoon and the two are enjoying every minute of their newlywed bliss in the sun.
Until Christian’s Seattle office calls and informs him there was a fire in the main computer server room. They suspect arson and have footage of a man sneaking into the building. When Christian and Ana review the footage, Ana recognizes the man as Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson), her old boss from SIP. Christian then tells Ana that the FAA got the results back from the helicopter crash and they think it was sabotage. All signs point to trouble with Jack, so Christian makes the decision to cut their Honeymoon short, and fly back to deal with this new development.
Back in Seattle, the honeymoon bliss quickly fades as Jack Hyde’s obsession escalates from corporate sabotage to a dangerous, personal vendetta against the Greys. Ana refuses to let the looming danger dim her new life, taking on a major promotion at the publishing company and embracing her role as Mrs. Grey, which only infuriates Hyde further. Just as Christian and Ana try to find their footing as newlyweds, the situation turns critical when Hyde stalks them with his allies, leading to car chases, break-ins and even kidnappings. This terrifying escalation forces Ana to make a desperate, solo move to protect her new family, officially turning their love story into a race against time.
It is safe to say that the final chapter of this trilogy does not slow down, trading the beaches of Monaco for a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. Dakota Johnson is spectacular once again, showing us a matured, confident Anastasia who is no longer just navigating Christian’s world, but actively co-commanding it as Mrs. Grey. The authentic chemistry between Johnson and Dornan that drew me in during the first film is still very much the anchor here, making their transition into married life feel completely earned amidst the chaos surrounding them.
Fifty Shades Freed does a fantastic job of raising the stakes by bringing Jack Hyde’s looming threat directly to their doorstep, turning the finale into a fast-paced romantic thriller. Seeing Ana and Christian forced to rely on total trust and emotional openness to survive this final danger brings their entire complex relationship arc to a satisfying full circle. As a new fan who reluctantly fell into this binge-watch, I was totally engrossed until the very last frame. If you have followed their journey from that very first elevator doors closing scene in Fifty Shades Of Grey, this explosive conclusion is the perfect payoff to the trilogy!
A few final thoughts on The Fifty Shades Of Grey Movies:
- Again, I have not read the books and passed on watching these movies a few times as I just wasn’t in a “Romantic Movie Frame Of Mind”
- I am a Dakota Johnson fan (with the exception of Madame Web), although I am sure she did the best she could, with what she was given to work with.
- In the end, I loved Anastasia and Christian’s story and journey. Watching them meet, fall in love, very physically at first and then emotionally, and work through all of their differences was inspiring. Isn’t that what we all desire deep down, that hardcore deep connection with another human being? And then to completely give all of yourself to that relationship and your partner in complete trust and love? It was a beautiful thing to watch these two on their journey.
- Watching Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan grow into these roles as the movies progressed was awe-inspiring, absolutely believable as Christian and Ana.
- Watching Dakota Johnson transform as Anastasia, from a very innocent young college girl to the wife of Christian Grey the billionaire, dealing with all of his baggage, and then to a mature pregnant mother telling her husband to “Grow the F#ck up!” was a beautiful transformative experience. Now that is a strong woman she grew into. Bravo Dakota Johnson! Bravo I say!
I now understand why these movies are a worldwide phenomenon…Bravissimo!!
