Man On The Run (2025) – Review

On September 16, 1969, two weeks before they released Abbey Road, and unbeknownst to the world, at a group meeting, John Lennon announced to George, Paul and Ringo that he was leaving The Beatles. While John had already given himself a new avenue for self-expression, via the Plastic Ono Band, Paul was left without any. No one was affected more by the breakup than Paul McCartney, The Beatles had been his whole life since he was a teenager. Paul and his wife, Linda, whom he had married in March 1969, disappeared to a rustic farm he had purchased a few years earlier, in Campbeltown, Scotland, firstly to grieve and then to sort things out.

He quietly crafted his first solo album, McCartney, in late 1969 and early 1970, releasing it in April of that year, a month before The Beatles’ last album, Let it Be. Later that year, he began a new album, partnering with Linda and a few top session musicians, to create his next release, Ram. Not long after Ram’s debut, he decided to once again have a band, forming Wings. The film not only covers those early years of struggle, but Wings growth from bar band to Stadium head-liner, from playing show-up-and-play university gigs, to a massively triumphant Wings Over America tour, to Wings’ end in late 1979, and 1980, culminating with John Lennon‘s passing.

The idea for Man On The Run  came about in early 2022 in a discussion Paul had with Scott Rodger, who has managed Paul for about twenty years, and his colleagues at MPL Communications, the company Paul founded in 1969 to handle his affairs. “He talked about this period of his career and how this story had never been properly told,” Rodger explains. “It was such an important period of Paul’s creative career, as well as in his personal life,” Rodger notes. MPL had done extensive research with Paul’s archives over many years, Rodger describes, “So we knew there was more than enough material to tell this story.

Man On The Run takes viewers on an intimate journey through Paul McCartney‘s
extraordinary life following the breakup of The Beatles and the formation of Wings with his wife, Linda. From Academy Award®-winning director Morgan Neville, the film chronicles the arc of McCartney’s solo career as he faces down a myriad of challenges while creating new music to define a new decade. Through unprecedented access to previously unseen footage and rare archival materials, the documentary captures Paul’s transformative post-Beatles era through a uniquely vulnerable lens.

Man On The Run is a fascinating inside look into the life of Paul and Linda McCartney. From the early days of solitary life on his farm in Scotland after the break up of The Beatles, to the World-Wide success of Wings. I am not a huge fan of The Beatles, but I was always a big fan of Wings. Seeing performance footage from the tail end of Wings at their peak reminded me of how much I enjoyed their music. I had forgotten how many hits they had and how I used to listen to Wings a lot back in the day. Whether you are a Beatles fan, a Paul McCartney fan or a Wings fan, or just a fan of music period, this Documentary film is well worth a watch! Give it a go!
