Backrooms Coming To Theaters Friday May 29, 2026!

The upcoming science fiction horror film Backrooms is officially scheduled for a wide theatrical release by A24 on Friday, May 29, 2026. The highly anticipated feature-length movie serves as the directorial debut for Kane Parsons (Kane Pixels), the 20-year-old internet creator whose viral YouTube analog horror series popularized the liminal space creepypasta. Moving from a bedroom computer to a full Hollywood production budget, the film expands the universe while preserving the uncanny dread that made the original videos a global success.

The Internet Origins: From 4chan to YouTube

The origins of the film represent one of the most unique production timelines in Hollywood history, evolving from an anonymous internet text post into a multi-million-dollar theatrical release.

The phenomenon began on May 12, 2019, when an anonymous user on the website 4chan posted an oddly unsettling, slanted photograph of an empty office space with sickly yellow wallpaper and fluorescent lighting. Another user attached a short paragraph coined as a “creepypasta” (an internet horror story), warning readers about accidentally “no-clipping out of reality” and waking up trapped in an endless, 600-million-square-mile maze of empty rooms that smell like old, moist carpet. This birthed the internet’s obsession with liminal spaces—familiar yet eerie transitional environments that evoke a deep sense of psychological dread.

In January 2022, a 16-year-old high school student named Kane Parsons uploaded a 9-minute short film titled The Backrooms (Found Footage). Filmed entirely in a realistic, grainy 1990s VHS camcorder style, the video showed a young filmmaker fleeing from a towering, wire-like entity. Parsons rendered the entire project from his bedroom using the open-source 3D software Blender. The video exploded overnight, amassing over 78 million views and spawning a massive 24-episode web series. Hollywood took notice of this digital footprint. In February 2023, independent studio A24 partnered with James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment to fast-track a feature film, making Parsons the youngest director in A24 history.

The 2026 Film and Cast

Filmed in Vancouver under the collaborative banner of A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps, the movie transitions the internet lore into a polished, cinematic thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 50 minutes. It has received an R rating for violent content, language, and bloody images.

The official synopsis centers on a psychologist who is forced to confront a terrifying, unexplained realm after one of her patients vanishes into a mysterious alternate dimension. The narrative catalyst occurs when a strange, impossible doorway appears in the basement of a mundane furniture showroom, leading directly into the infinite maze. The film explores themes of corporate negligence, reality-glitching, and psychological isolation.

To ground the abstract horror of the setting, the film features an acclaimed, high-profile ensemble cast:

  • Renate Reinsve: The Cannes-winning star (The Worst Person in the World) leads the film as the psychologist investigating the anomaly.
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor: The Academy Award nominee (12 Years a Slave) plays a central figure exploring the depths of the dimension.
  • Mark Duplass: The indie horror icon (Creep) lends his psychological thriller experience to the cast.
  • Supporting Cast: The lineup is rounded out by rising stars Finn Bennett (True Detective), Lukita Maxwell (Afraid), and Avan Jogia.

From Blender to 30,000 Square Feet of Yellow Wallpaper

For years, director Kane Parsons built the eerie, non-Euclidean geometry of the Backrooms entirely inside his computer. When A24 greenlit the project, Parsons transitioned his digital asset blueprints directly into massive, tangible construction projects. The production team built 30,000 square feet of physical, practical “liminal space” sets for the actors to navigate. The environment was so labyrinthine and repetitive that crew members regularly got turned around and lost during filming.

Reflecting on the surreal experience of seeing his digital hobby materialize on a Hollywood scale, Parsons shared:

“I was working in Blender modeling the sets, and then we would literally go and build them in real time. Seeing the finished construction was the strangest, coolest moment on this project for me. That part was really gratifying, being able to see the process I’ve done for years turn into something physical.”

Parsons also noted that the film scales down the reliance on digital monsters to double down on deep, atmospheric, character-driven isolation:

“It does take more of a specific approach, where you’re seeing it through the lens of these specific characters—these individuals living these atomized, lonely lives. In the film, there is rarely a moment where there’s more than one or two characters on screen at a given time.”

A Landmark Moment for Internet Creators

When Backrooms hits theaters on May 29, 2026, it will represent more than just a highly anticipated summer horror film. It marks a historic shift in how Hollywood discovers and trusts new creative talent. By handing a multi-million-dollar budget and an elite cast to a 20-year-old internet visionary, A24 has proven that the next generation of blockbuster directors is currently building worlds on their bedroom computers. Tickets are already available through major platforms like Fandango and AMC Theatres ahead of the Memorial Day weekend rollout. Whether you are a longtime fan of the online lore or a newcomer seeking pure psychological dread, this release is set to redefine modern horror.
