The Mother (2023) – Review

We don’t know her name; we only know her as The Mother (Jennifer Lopez), a lethal ex-military sniper forced out of hiding. What becomes clear almost immediately is that she will go to any lengths to protect 12-year-old Zoey from the violent past that’s finally caught up with them.

I’ve watched The Mother (2023) several times now, and it’s a movie I keep coming back to. What hooks me isn’t just the action, but that chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and Lucy Paez. Their scenes together feel messy, tense, and tender all at once—exactly what you’d expect from a mother and daughter who barely know each other but are suddenly thrown into life-or-death situations. You can feel the push-and-pull between Zoey’s anger and fear and The Mother’s guilt and fierce protectiveness.

Lucy Paez really holds her own here, vulnerable in the beginning, yet she becomes just as tough as Jennifer. I honestly don’t think the movie would have worked as well with a different young actress in it as Zoey. She brings a perfect mix of vulnerability, anger, and courage that makes that mother-daughter relationship feel real and keeps the emotional side grounded, even when the action gets big and loud.

Jennifer Lopez sells her role of a woman who’s done terrible things but still loves her child more than anything. I love seeing her switch from cold, calculated fighter to awkward, vulnerable mom trying to teach Zoey how to survive. Their bond makes those quieter moments stand out between the gunfights and chases.

The supporting cast adds a lot too. Paul Raci brings a calm, grounded presence that makes the world feel bigger and more believable. I also really enjoyed the chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and Omari Hardwick—I felt like there was a deeper connection waiting to happen between their characters, something the movie only hints at before cutting it short. Part of me wishes the story had let the three of them escape together and explore what that new family might look like. I know that’s a bit of a romantic notion, but it’s hard not to imagine a version where survival doesn’t come with so much loss.

Overall, The Mother hits that sweet spot for a rewatchable streaming thriller. It has strong performances, solid action, and a central mother-daughter relationship that keeps me invested every time I press play. It may not reinvent the genre, but for me, it delivers exactly what I want: a tough, protective mom, a daughter worth fighting for, and a story I’m happy to revisit.
