New Movie In The Hand Of Dante Debuts On Netflix Wednesday June 24, 2026.
Julian Schnabel Directs an Elite, All-Star Cast in a Dual-Timeline Noir.
Get ready for an intellectual, visually spectacular trip through time and the criminal underworld. Netflix has officially debuted the trailer for In the Hand of Dante, an ambitious, 153-minute dark tragicomedy thriller directed by Academy Award-nominated artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Basquiat). Featuring one of the most astonishing ensemble casts assembled in years, this film drops on streaming next week.
Based on the acclaimed 2002 meta-fiction novel by Nick Tosches, the film balances a complex, twin-timeline narrative structure that connects historical Italy with gritty, modern-day New York corporate crime.
- The 21st Century: The modern storyline follows a disillusioned, cynical author named Nick Tosches (Oscar Isaac). He is pulled out of retirement by a ruthless New York mafia don named Joe Black (John Malkovich) to authenticate an impossible discovery: an original, handwritten manuscript of The Divine Comedy stolen from the Vatican library. Seduced by the artifact, Nick ultimately decides to double-cross the mob and steal the priceless literary treasure for himself.
- The 14th Century: Unbeknownst to Nick, he is spiritually bound to the past. The parallel timeline tracks the historical poet Dante Alighieri (also played by Oscar Isaac) as he escapes into exile and plunges into a metaphorical hell to write his definitive masterpiece, seeking inspiration from his forbidden love.
In the Hand of Dante features an elite lineup of Hollywood royalty and iconic filmmakers:
- Oscar Isaac in a monumental dual performance as both modern author Nick Tosches and medieval poet Dante Alighieri.
- Gal Gadot in a dual role as Giulietta (Nick’s modern wife) and Gemma Donati (Dante’s 14th-century wife).
- John Malkovich as Joe Black, the menacing mob boss hunting down the manuscript.
- Gerard Butler and Jason Momoa in key supporting roles navigating the violent underworld elements.
- Al Pacino as a central figure in the literary underworld.
- Martin Scorsese as Isaiah, an elderly, wise sage who acts as a deep spiritual advisor to Dante during his writing process.
