A24’s How to Make a Killing
debuts on HBO MAX Friday June 19, 2026.
How to Make a Killing is a 2026 black comedy thriller film written and directed by John Patton Ford, inspired by the 1949 British film Kind Hearts and Coronets by Robert Hamer and John Dighton. Glen Powell stars along with Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, and Ed Harris in the supporting cast.
Disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family, blue-collar Becket Redfellow (Glen Powell) will stop at nothing to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in his way.
Glen Powell on The Movie:
In 2023, Glen Powell found himself at a crossroads. The 37-year-old star was enjoying a trajectory that had taken a stratospheric turn thanks to his standout performance in Top Gun: Maverick. Two popular hits followed – Hit Man, which he co-wrote and produced alongside director Richard Linklater, and Anyone But You, his romantic-comedy box-office smash with Sydney Sweeney.
But Powell craved something deeper. Something provocative and punchy that pushed people’s buttons — a genre-stretching movie that would satisfy a personal creative itch and have audiences debating its moral grey areas long after the credits rolled.
He found what he was looking for in the new project from acclaimed writer-director John Patton Ford (Emily the Criminal). “How to Make a Killing is a loose reimagining of the Ealing Studios dry comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets from the 1940s,” says Ford. “This is a more bombastic, American version of the British comedy classic.”
Powell became enchanted with Ford’s Emily the Criminal follow-up for its irresistible premise and captivating lead character: Becket Redfellow, a young man robbed of his birthright to a vast family fortune, determined to get what he feels he’s owed by murdering his way through the family members who stand in his way.
“I loved the script because its concept was just so compelling and had such a great ensemble of supporting characters,” Powell says. “This was a part I had never played before.”
Powell loved Emily the Criminal, and when he met with the writer-director, his fandom only amplified. “Sitting down with John, I became a fan of him as a person too, because the movie he was talking about doing next was the kind of project I had never seen on the big screen before,” says Powell. “We’ve seen American Psycho and its derivatives, and we’ve seen Taxi Driver and derivatives of that too. But How to Make a Killing brought something fresh and new on a tonal level and a taste level — it’s like Ocean’s 11 with murder, rock & roll, and swagger.”
