Apple Releases True-Story Revolution ‘Being Heumann’ Friday in select Theaters
Being Heumann is a powerful new movie based on the real-life memoir of Judy Heumann, who is often called the “mother of the disability rights movement.”. It is directed by Siân Heder, who previously won an Oscar for her hit film CODA.
Set in 1977, the story follows Judy (Ruth Madeley), a dynamic young woman in a wheelchair who decides she has finally had enough of everyday discrimination and inaccessible public spaces.
She brings together a scrappy, tightly bound coalition of over a hundred young people for a radical act of defiance. They spontaneously march into the San Francisco Federal Building and completely take it over.
What starts as an impulsive protest turns into a historic 28-day sit-in—the longest occupation of a federal building in American history! The group refuses to leave the government offices until a stubborn bureaucrat (Mark Ruffalo) signs a law forcing federal spaces and public transit to become fully accessible.
Just like her previous film CODA, director Siân Heder focused heavily on authentic casting. The movie breaks industry records by featuring the largest group of disabled actors ever assembled for a single film production.
Being Huemann doesn’t play out like a stuffy, boring history lesson. Instead, it is a lively, funny, and deeply emotional revolution, showing a group of outsiders using wit and pure stubbornness to change the world.
Being Huemann comes to select theaters Friday November 6, 2026, before debuting on Apple TV a week later on November 13, 2026!
