The Name You Know, The Nightmare You Don’t: Breaking Down the New ‘Ebenezer’ Trailer
While July’s first look gave us a haunting glimpse of Johnny Depp’s unrecognizable transformation into Ebenezer Scrooge, the newly released second trailer proves that director Ti West is pushing this adaptation into territory far darker than anyone anticipated.
Operating under the chilling new tagline, “The name you know, the story you don’t,” the trailer doubles down on psychological terror—most notably in a horrific sequence where Scrooge is shown being buried alive by the spirits.
Beyond the atmospheric dread, Trailer 2 finally gives us a deeper look at the star-studded ensemble in action. We see a weary, grim Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, alongside deeply unsettling, nightmarish iterations of the Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present played by Andrea Riseborough and Tramell Tillman.
If the initial movie stills promised a gothic Victorian nightmare, this second trailer confirms that Ebenezer is skipping standard festive cheer entirely in favor of an uncompromised, modern horror experience:
- The Living Burial: The most shocking sequence shows Scrooge being forced into an open grave and buried alive. This confirms the spirits aren’t just haunting his mind—they are inflicting physical, life-threatening torment.
- Marley’s Chilling Warning: Ian McKellen‘s Jacob Marley is covered in rusted, heavy chains that drag with a metallic screech. His dialogue hints that he isn’t just there to warn Scrooge, but to actively punish him for their shared past.
- A Twisted Christmas Past: Andrea Riseborough’s Ghost of Christmas Past doesn’t look like a gentle guide. She appears as a pale, ghostly specter with erratic movements, using Scrooge’s worst childhood memories as a psychological weapon.
- A Grim Victorian Reality: The trailer highlights the grueling poverty of Victorian London through Rupert Grint’s Bob Cratchit. His haggard appearance emphasizes a bleak, hopeless atmosphere that grounds the supernatural horror in a real-world tragedy.
- The Clock Motif: Time plays a massive role in the trailer’s sound design. A loud, distorted ticking noise builds in speed and volume throughout the footage, counting down to a final, midnight reckoning that Scrooge may not survive.
Ebenezer is scheduled to be released in theaters by Paramount Pictures on November 13, 2026.
