Sylvester Stallone’s Ultimate Hollywood Gamble Comes to the Big Screen in ‘I Play Rocky’

The incredible true story behind the creation of an American cinematic masterpiece hits select theaters tomorrow, November 6, 2026. Directed by Academy Award winner Peter Farrelly (Green Book) and written by Peter Gamble, I Play Rocky chronicles the desk-to-ring struggle of an unknown, broke actor named Sylvester Stallone who risked everything to bring his definitive vision to life.

Long before he was an international icon, Sylvester Stallone was a struggling, flat-broke actor. In 1975, he had just $106 in his bank account, a pregnant wife, and a beloved bullmastiff named Butkus that he could barely afford to feed.

On March 24, 1975, Stallone watched a heavyweight boxing match between the legendary Muhammad Ali and a virtually unknown journeyman named Chuck Wepner. Inspired by Wepner’s refusal to back down, Stallone sat down and furiously wrote the entire first draft of Rocky in just three days.

When producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff read the script, they knew they had a goldmine. They offered Stallone a massive $360,000 for the rights—a life-changing fortune equivalent to over $1.8 million today.

The studio wanted an established A-lister like Robert Redford, Ryan O’Neal, or James Caan to play the titular boxer but Stallone flatly refused. He insisted that he had to star as Rocky. Impressed by his conviction, the producers finally relented. And the rest, as they say, is history!

The film features a powerhouse supporting cast, including AnnaSophia Robb, Toby Kebbell, P.J. Byrne, Stephan James, Jay Duplass, Tracy Letts, and Matt Dillon.

Clocking in at approximately 128 minutes, this PG-13 drama captures the heart, grit, and absolute determination it took to birth a multi-billion dollar franchise.

I Play Rocky swings into theaters Friday November 6, 2026.
