Trust Me, I’m A Doctor (2026) – First Look!

The Shocking True Story Behind ‘Trust Me, I’m A Doctor’!

While upcoming biographical drama Trust Me, I’m A Doctor is scheduled for wide theatrical release on October 16, 2026, the movie’s wildest moments actually happened in a real Los Angeles courtroom.

Starring Kal Penn as Dr. Sandeep Kapoor and Abbie Cornish as Anna Nicole Smith, the film explores the dark side of celebrity proximity. To get you ready for opening weekend, here is the real history behind the headlines.

The Book That Started It All

The film is adapted from Dr. Kapoor’s 2017 self-published memoir, Trust Me, I’m A Doctor: My Life Before, During and After Anna Nicole Smith. For years, Kapoor recorded his private thoughts in simple, spiral-bound notebooks. He never expected those diaries to become public record—until federal agents seized them following Anna Nicole Smith’s tragic overdose death in 2007.

A High-Stakes Legal Battle

It is important to note that Dr. Kapoor was never criminally charged with causing Smith’s death. Instead, he, psychiatrist Dr. Khristine Eroshevich, and Smith’s boyfriend Howard K. Stern faced severe felony drug conspiracy charges. Prosecutors alleged they over-prescribed massive amounts of opiates and sedatives to feed an addiction, while the defense maintained they were aggressively treating her chronic pain..

The Diary Entry That Shook the Courtroom

The turning point of the real-life 2010 trial came when prosecutors read Kapoor’s private journal entries aloud. One entry from June 2005 detailed a West Hollywood parade after-party where he admitted to “making out with Anna, my patient, blurring the lines.” The entry ended with a hauntingly prophetic question: “Can she ruin me?”

What to Expect From the Film

Despite the media circus and intense public scrutiny, Dr. Kapoor was acquitted of all criminal charges in late 2010. Written and directed by Thane Economou, the movie focuses heavily on Dr. Kapoor’s personal perspective. Trust Me, I’m A Doctor is a dark comedy-drama about a man watching his life spiral out of control over a single lapse in judgment.
