Eternity (2025) – Review

Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) and Larry Cutler ( Miles Teller) have been married for 65 years. They are driving in their old Volvo Station Wagon to a family Gender Reveal Party. Joan has terminal cancer that they are keeping from the family, and Larry is cantankerous as he complains and stuffs pretzels into his mouth from a canister on the dashboard. They are the quintessential old married couple on their way to enjoy an afternoon with their kids and grandkids. As Joan and Larry are sitting in the living room with their kids and grandkids, their daughter gives Joan a box of old photographs she found in the basement. The first framed picture is of Joan and her first husband Luke (Callum Turner) who died in The Korean War. Larry, who has been steadily chewing on pretzels since they arrived, chokes as he sees the picture and hears Luke’s name. Unfortunately Larry’s passion for pretzels has caught up with him as he…………

Awakens to find himself on a train to The Afterlife. Completely disoriented, his AC (Afterlife Coordinator) Anna (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) tells Larry the bad news. He has died and is in the Junction, where everyone goes when they die on the way to The Afterlife. The Junction is like a big convention center filled with booths of all the different Eternities promoting their worlds. He has one week to decide which Eternity he wants to go to and there are a lot to choose from: The Mountain Eternity, The Women Only Eternity…..#423 because the first 422 have been filled already (popular place), Studio 54 Eternity (without the AIDS Virus), 1930’s Germany (without the Nazi’s), and so many more. And once you choose an Eternity, you are stuck with it, there is no turning back. It is Eternity after all. Larry spends the next week with Anna guiding him, trying to make a decision about which Eternity to go to. He makes a decision, picks an Eternity and hands Anna a letter to give to Joan when she passes on and comes to the junction. As Larry heads to the train that will take him he passes……

Joan headed into The Junction. Larry abruptly changes direction, breaking all the rules and catches up with Joan in The Junction. Ryan (John Early) is Joan’s Afterlife Coordinator and is approaching from the other side as Larry and Joan are hugging each other. Ryan has brought another person with him, Luke, Joan’s first husband who died in The Korean War after they were married for two years. Larry met Joan after Luke’s death when she was grieving and a bit of a mess. Luke has been in The Junction for 67 years waiting for Joan to get there so he and Joan could go to Eternity together. Joan sees Luke first and is immediately shocked, overwhelmed by all those buried emotions of losing Luke that come boiling up to the surface. Larry is shocked as well, Luke is the last person he thought he’d see here. And now Luke is standing in front of his wife of 65 years, telling her he has waited all this time for her…..

And that is where the drama really begins. There are so many decisions to be made. What Eternity? With which husband? Number 1 or number 2? And in a week’s time? Joan has her hands full. It is a hilarious yet heartbreaking decision to have to make. Elizabeth Olsen does a great job of portraying that in her role as Joan. Her chemistry with Miles Teller as the old married couple suddenly experiencing youthful bodies was natural and deeply authentic, you felt like they had actually been together that long. Miles Teller maintains the old man Larry persona while dealing with a young body, reliving earlier years in their marriage. Callum Turner brings the memories of his brief marriage to Joan into full bloom. Looking exactly as they did when they got married in their youth, he is anxious to live the life with Joan he was denied with his death. Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early are hilarious as Anna and Ryan. I would have to say that there performance and chemistry in Eternity are right up there with Elizabeth, Miles and Callum.

It is a classic Love Triangle story with a completely different twist. The Eternities or worlds on display in The Junction are hilarious and well thought out. It is something you really need to pay attention to as the movie goes along. There is one scene where a man tries to escape “Museum World” screaming ,”I can’t look at another Painting!” It is an interesting premise and quandary. The Old familiar love or the fresh exciting youthful Romance you never got to fulfil. Eternity will make you laugh, it will make you sad, and it will make you think about those decisions. Will you be glad you watched it? I think so, I enjoyed it! Great performances, a very interesting take on Death, The Afterlife, Eternity, True Love vs. First Love and a reminder that even in the infinite, it’s the messy, everyday moments that truly define us.
