Remarkably Bright Creatures (2026) is based on The Novel of the same name by Shelby Van Pelt published May 3, 2022.
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.
Remarkably Bright Creatures (2026) – Review
Tova Sullivan (Sally Field) is widowed and lives in Sowell Bay, Washington. She lost her son Erik Sullivan in a mysterious boating accident 30 years ago at the age of eighteen. To keep herself busy she has taken on a job working nights at The Sowell Bay Aquarium. The Aquarium is also home to an older (in Octopus years) rescued giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus (Voiced by Alfred Molina). He is a bit curmudgeonly and rather unimpressed by humans, except for that cleaning lady Tova, who is starting to grow on him. He narrates a great deal of the movie as the story unfolds.
Cameron Cassmore (Lewis Pullman) has just drifted into town in his current home, a 1986 Ford Econoline Camper Van. The van is the only thing he got from his mother when she died of an overdose. He has come to Sowell Bay to track down his estranged father Simon Brinks, a wealthy Real Estate Developer. Cameron’s hope is that he can get the eighteen years of back child support he never got and change his financially strapped life for the better. When Tova sprains her ankle, Cameron is hired to help Tova at the aquarium until she heals.
As Tova and Cameron become closer, he tells her about his mission in finding his father and changing his life. Tova enlists all her resources to help him solve the mystery of his estranged father, and who his mother really was. All the while, Marcellus the octopus watches and listens to their stories. Realizing that he knows more about what is going on with them then they do, he starts to play Detective and set their lives straight.
Remarkably Bright Creatures is a heart-warming family drama narrated by a curmudgeonly but loveable giant Octopus. It is the story of all of their lives intertwining in ways you can’t see coming, well, except for Marcellus who seems to know everything. It was well acted by Sally Field, Lewis Pullman, Sofia Black-D ‘Elia and Colm Meaney. It was nice to see our old friend Sally Field in this nice little family drama. Well worth a watch on Netflix!
