The Documentary
Song Sung Blue (2025) is based on the 2008 documentary film of the same name by Greg Kohs.
“I first encountered Lightning & Thunder in the early ’90s while directing a documentary for Harley-Davidson. There they were, perched atop a sticky outdoor bar at the Wisconsin State Fair grounds, belting out Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” to a crowd of leather-clad bikers dancing their chaps off. It gave me goosebumps, and I felt compelled to share them with others. I figured maybe I could help them chase their dream while going after my own. So, I pieced together old VHS footage of Lightning and Thunder’s bar gigs, along with newsreel recordings from the gardening accident, and created a proof-of-concept reel for a scripted “Hollywood” feature film, Song Sung Blue—a self-financed documentary exploring the love story of Lightning & Thunder.”
Song Sung Blue (2025) – Review
Mike Sardina (Hugh Jackman) hustled as a Milwaukee guitarist, most notably backing The Esquires—a soul band that hit Billboard’s top ten in 1967. By 1989, tired of sideman gigs, he launched a Neil Diamond tribute act and recruited Claire Stingl (Kate Hudson), whom he’d met two years earlier at a fair, belting Patsy Cline tunes.
Mike (using the stage name Lightning) dubbed her Thunder, and Lightning & Thunder was born. With local musician pals, they booked gigs everywhere. Despite being a straight Neil Diamond tribute band, they blew up in Milwaukee—even opening for Pearl Jam at Summerfest on July 8, 1995, after Eddie Vedder caught their set.
Along the way Mike and Claire fell in love, eventually getting married before a gig at the Wisconsin State Fair in front of 1,000 friends and fans. They moved in together along with Claire’s two children from another marriage. Mike and Claire had a dream, they wanted to entertain people doing what they loved, raise their families together and make enough money doing it that they wouldn’t have to do anything else.
There were some incredibly good times, opening for Pearl Jam was a career high point, and were living a fairytale romantic life of their own making. There were lean and heartbreaking times as well and the movie takes us on that journey. After I watched Song Sung Blue (2025) and saw it was based on a 2008 Documentary, I tracked it down on YouTube. The Movie is very close to the documentary, Hollywood’s kicked up version.
Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson did a great job playing Mike and Claire Sardina. I was thoroughly convinced of that after watching Mike and Claire in the documentary. Hugh and Kate both sing in the movie, their performances aren’t lip-synced; they’re really singing. The chemistry between them feels real and it shines through. Just like the love Mike and Claire had for performing and each other. I honestly don’t think that anyone else could have pulled off these roles.
Kate Hudson completely nailed Claire Sardina, and Hugh Jackman perfectly captured Lightning’s charisma and energy on the stage. Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) plays Mark Shurilla, a fellow Milwaukee musician who played guitar in Lightning & Thunder. Jim Belushi plays Tom D’Amato, Lightning & Thunder’s longtime manager.
I thought it was a great movie about the American dream and an even better American romance. I honestly loved it and can’t wait to see it again. If you’re into music biopics, underdog bands, or just a heartfelt love story, this one is highly recommended!
