The Gentlemen (2020) – Review

Matthew McConaughey stars as Michael “Mickey” Pearson, a successful Marijuana Dealer in England, who has decided to retire and sell off his lucrative empire. American Billionaire and Cannabis Baron Matthew Berger (Jeremy Strong) is Mickey’s chosen candidate, while up and coming Chinese Gangster Dry Eye (Henry Golding) also has his eye on Mickey’s Business. The word is out and everyone wants to replace Mickey as “The King Of The Jungle” in the drug underworld. Also keen to disrupt Mickey is Tabloid Newspaper Owner Big Dave (Eddie Marsan), who has had it in for Mickey ever since he slighted him in public at a formal affair. Add to the already chaotic mix one sleazy private investigator named Fletcher (Hugh Grant), who has been stalking Mickey and his operation gathering photos, videos and evidence on Big Dave’s behalf.

Fletcher has snuck in to Raymond Smith’s house, Ray (Charlie Hunman) being Mickey’s right hand man, Fletcher explains that he has something to show him. As Fletcher explains all the evidence he has, and lays out the dealings going on that he is now privy to, he tells Charlie that unless Mickey Pays him 20 million he will give it all to Big Dave so he can spread it all over the press. Fletcher narrates the story as we watch the events unfold in real time, starting with the sudden exposure of one of Mickey’s Marijuana sites. Amateur fighters and aspiring YouTuber’s “The Toddlers” break into Mickey’s site and steal his crop and cash, filming the whole escapade and posting it on YouTube. When “The Toddlers” handler Coach (Colin Farrell) finds out he insists they take down the video.

Realizing that they raided one of Mickey’s sites and caused irreparable harm, he goes to Ray to offer his services to pay off the debt his boys have caused with their trouble in setting Mickey’s business back. Ray  has his hands full with everything going on and decides that Coach and his boys might play a part in setting all this straight. It is a chaotic back-stabbing, circus as everyone attempts to steal Mickey’s domain out from underneath him. All while Fletcher narrates presents the chaotic events in real time, like he was pitching a film script.

Featuring an ensemble cast, sharp witty dialogue and fast pacing, The Gentlemen is highly regarded as one of Guy Ritchie’s finer films. Excellent performances from the entire cast, most notably Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant. It is a fun ride, I have seen it numerous times since it came out. I came across it last night on Netflix and went for it again. If you haven’t seen it, it is well worth a watch. If you have and it’s been awhile, yup, give it a go again.
