Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver Shine in James Gray’s 1980s Mob Drama ‘Paper Tiger’

NEON has officially pulled back the curtain on Paper Tiger, the highly anticipated 1980s crime drama from acclaimed director James Gray (Armageddon Time, Ad Astra). Photographed on gorgeous 35mm film, the movie treats audiences to a tense, moody look at a family caught in the crosshairs of the criminal underworld.

Set in 1986, Paper Tiger follows family man Irwin Pearl (Miles Teller) and his ex-cop brother Gary (Adam Driver) as they embark on a business venture cleaning up the polluted Gowanus Canal.

Chasing financial security, their ambitions take a dark turn when a dangerous run-in entangles them with the local Russian mafia.

As the brothers plunge deeper into the criminal underbelly of New York, their family bonds begin to fray under lethal threats, forcing Irwin’s wife, Christine (Scarlett Johansson), to navigate a high-stakes turf war to keep them alive.

Beyond the powerhouse trio of Johansson, Driver, and Teller, James Gray has assembled a spectacular supporting lineup that includes:

Giancarlo Esposito
Gavin Goudey
Roman Engel

The film already holds a massive wave of prestige buzz following a spectacular premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it received a roaring 10-minute standing ovation from critics and attendees alike.

Paper Tiger premieres in select theaters November 13, 2026 before it’s nationwide release a week later November 20, 2026.
