The Next ‘Resident Evil’ Movie Is Throwing Out the Rulebook!
If you’ve never played a Resident Evil game or watched any of the older films, don’t worry—Sony Pictures’ upcoming 2026 reboot is a completely fresh start designed for everyone, and it looks absolutely terrifying!
What is Resident Evil?
For those new to the franchise, Resident Evil is a legendary survival-horror world. It usually revolves around the Umbrella Corporation, an evil company whose secret biological experiments unleash a virus that turns people into flesh-eating zombies and creates monstrous creatures.
Why This New Movie is Different (and Exciting!)
The original six movies (starring Milla Jovovich) were high-flying, superhero-style action flicks. This new film, hitting theaters and IMAX on September 18, 2026, is doing something completely different. Directed by horror mastermind Zach Cregger (Barbarian), it is trading the superhuman action for pure, grounded survival horror.
Here is what you need to know about the upcoming reboot:
- A Hero Who Can’t Fight Back: 🏃♂️💨 No elite soldiers here. The main character, Bryan (Austin Abrams), is just an ordinary, out-of-shape medical courier. When the zombie outbreak hits Raccoon City during a blizzard, he panics and struggles to survive just like a normal person would.
- Zero Homework Required: 🧩 You don’t need to know decades of video game lore. The movie tells a brand-new, standalone story about normal citizens trapped on the other side of town, so you won’t feel lost.
- Classic Game Vibes: 🎮🎥 The director used special camera angles to copy the exact “third-person over-the-shoulder” feel of the modern video games, making you feel like you are trapped right in the nightmare with the characters.
- Real Monsters, Not Bad CGI: 🐙🧟♂️ The film uses practical effects and massive puppets to bring its terrifying monsters to life, promising plenty of gross, physical scares.
With a stellar cast including Paul Walter Hauser and Zach Cherry, this is shaping up to be the scariest Resident Evil yet.
Resident Evil comes to theaters Friday September 18, 2026.
