Peter Berg’s Gritty WWII Epic ‘The Mosquito Bowl’ Puts Football Heroes on the Front Lines

Netflix has given us our first look at The Mosquito Bowl, a heart-wrenching World War II drama that blends sports history with battlefield survival.

Directed by Peter Berg, the movie tells the remarkable true story of four legendary college football stars who traded their stadium jerseys for U.S. Marine Corps uniforms immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The movie follows four rivals-turned-brothers: John McLaughry (Nicholas Galitzine), Bob Bauman (Bill Skarsgård), Tony Butkovich (Ray Nicholson), and Dave Schreiner (Tom Francis).

After completing brutal Marine boot camp training under a strict drill instructor (played in a surprise appearance by sports personality Pat McAfee), the young men are deployed straight into the Pacific theater.

The title of the film comes from a legendary, real-life football game played on Guadalcanal on Christmas Eve in 1944. To boost morale, the 4th and 29th Marine Regiments organized a massive game featuring collegiate and prospective NFL all-stars.

It was a legendary display of athleticism in the middle of a swamp—but it also served as the final moment of joy for many of the men before they boarded ships for the historic, deadly invasion of Okinawa.

The film features an incredible lineup of Hollywood’s fastest-rising talent alongside a thunderous, emotional score composed by the iconic post-rock band Explosions in the Sky:

Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) as the steadfast John McLaughry.
Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu, IT) as the resilient Bob Bauman.
Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis rounding out the main brotherhood of athletes.
Peter Berg pulling double duty by appearing on screen as General Simon Buckner.
