Apex (2026) – Review

Charlize Theron stars as Sasha who recently lost her husband Tommy (Eric Bana). They were scaling the Troll wall in Norway, Europe’s tallest vertical rock face, which rises straight up 3,300 feet above the valley floor. A violent storm caught them trying to retreat down the face as an avalanche crashed down on them from above. Tommy was knocked off of the side of the mountain and thrown down into the valley. Five months later, Sasha heads to Australia where Tommy was from to seek closure and lay his spirit to rest.

She is heading to Wandarra National Park in the Australian Outback for a solo hiking and kayaking trip, carrying Tommy’s lucky compass with her. Stopping for gas, she runs into Ben (Taron Egerton), a local who gives her some tips on the best routes in the park. With the exception of a couple of local hunters she warily tries to avoid, Sasha has a solitary time, Kayaking and camping down the river rapids in the park.

One morning she awakes to find that her gear, bag and food have been stolen. Dismayed she hikes down the river and runs into Ben who is camping on the side of the river. Sasha is Leary of Ben but he assures her that he has extra supplies and will set her up. He cooks her some fish as they exchange stories about their lives. Everything seems fine until Ben starts acting a little weird and Sasha notices a wrist band on Ben’s hand. It came from her stolen bag.

Sasha immediately freaks out and Ben gets her bag, telling her, “You have until the end of this song I am about to play to run as far as you can. Then I am coming for you.” He starts singing aloud with the music as he points a crossbow at Sasha. Sasha takes off running and the race is on in the middle of the very uninhabited Australian Outback.

What follows is a grueling, high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse where the vast, beautiful Outback becomes a claustrophobic trap. Taron Egerton’s transition from ‘friendly local’ to ‘predatory nightmare’ is worth the price of admission alone, but watching Charlize Theron change from a vulnerable grieving widow to a calculated, cold-blooded survivor is a transformation you won’t want to miss!
