Christy (2025) – Review
Christy (2025) is the incredible true story of the life and career of Christy Martin. Born and raised in the small town of Itmann, West Virginia, Christy enters a local female boxing competition on a whim and wins. Word quickly spreads to Jim Martin, a local boxing coach who takes Christy under his wing. Dubbing her “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” and outfitting her with a pink boxing outfit, Christy’s career starts to take off and so does the romantic relationship between Jim and Christy. They eventually move to Apopka, Florida and open a boxing gym. After a meeting with Don King, Christy signs a contract with him and her career really takes off.
Christy put female boxing on the map with her victory over Deirdre Gogarty on the undercard of Mike Tyson vs. Frank Bruno II in 1996. That same year she became the first and only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. She was also the first female boxer to sign with the legendary promoter Don King, the first woman inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall Of Fame, and the International Boxing Hall Of Fame. Christy has had a total of 59 fights with 31 of those knockouts.
Christy’s professional triumphs were overshadowed by an increasingly controlling and tumultuous relationship with her husband and trainer Jim Martin. That horrifying dynamic is a big focus of this heartfelt Bio-Pic, exploring her struggle to survive in an increasingly threatening environment. While the film explores her time in the ring and shows just how tough she could be. It also shows us how tough her life with Jim was, and how it became a struggle to survive in spite of her success.
Ben Foster is a different person than the one I just watched in Hell Or High Water. Where you rooted for him in that movie, you despise him in Christy. Ben’s portrayal of Jim Martin and his abuses were chilling and despicable. And then there’s Sydney Sweeney. If you only know her from Euphoria or Anyone But You, prepare to be floored. She completely disappears into Christy. It’s not just the 90s mullet or the grit; it’s the way she carries herself.
In the ring, she’s this powerhouse with a ‘never-back-down’ stare, but the movie does a heartbreaking job of showing how that light dims whenever she’s around Jim. Seeing her bulk up and take those hits makes the boxing scenes feel incredibly visceral—you aren’t just watching a choreographed dance; you’re watching a woman fight for her respect and, eventually, her life.
Sydney Sweeney’s performance as Christy left me with goosebumps. I have recently seen Sydney in Echo Valley, Eden, Americana and The Housemaid and while she consistently raises the bar, this is her best performance yet. Going all out to gain 35 pounds of muscle to accurately mirror Christy Martin’s powerful, athletic frame, and training like a professional athlete for over three months. But it is not just the physical transformation that made this so good, it was Sydney’s connection and belief in Christy Martin that lead to her heart and soul portrayal of her.
It’s an Oscar-worthy performance because she doesn’t play Christy as a victim. Even in her lowest moments, you see that ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ toughness simmering underneath. The movie really makes you feel the weight of her secret—that while the whole world was cheering for her as this pioneer of women’s sports, she was going home to a nightmare.
You owe it to yourself to watch Sydney Sweeney portraying Christy Martin, an awe inspiring story and performance!
