Good Fortune (2025) – Review

Gabriel (Keanu Reeves) is a Guardian Angel working in Los Angeles, California. He is in charge of Texting and Driving. His duties are assigned to him in a schedule, and his job is to prevent the people on his list from getting into an accident while Texting and Driving. He is a newbie and is working his way up the ranks so that one day he can have big wings like older, seasoned Angel Azrael. After listening to Angel Azrael (Stephen McKinley Henderson) give a speech about finding and guiding a lost soul, Gabriel feels the need to do the same. He asks his supervisor Martha (Sandra Oh) if he can guide a lost soul like Azrael. She tells him that while that is a noble aspiration, he must work his way up the ranks and earn that right. Gabriel pleads with her telling her that he has already found a lost soul, his name is…

Arj (Aziz Ansari), and he is having a rough time. He came to Los Angeles with ambitions of becoming a Documentary Filmmaker, and so far he hasn’t had any luck in that department. He is a gig worker doing odd jobs through The Task Sergeant App by day, works part time evenings at Hardware Heaven, and sleeps in his car. Gabriel had saved Arj from getting in a wreck while Texting and Driving the other day and he has been on his mind ever since. Despite Martha’s insistence that Gabriel stick to his schedule saving people from Texting and Driving, he can’t help himself and decides to guide Arj. Breaking a cardinal rule (contact with a human being), Gabriel shows himself to Arj telling him he is there to save him from being a lost soul. Arj tells Gabriel that the only way he could save him would be to make him rich. Wanting to show Arj the error of that thinking, he decides to switch Arj’s life with the life of the wealthy Tech Mogul…

Jeff (Seth Rogen) who just fired Arj for misusing his company credit card. Arj had gone to Jeff’s house after Jeff used the Task Sergeant App looking for help in straightening out his garage. Impressed with Arj’s work, Jeff hired him to be his Personal Assistant for a week on a trial basis.  Arj went on a date with his Hardware Heaven Co-worker Elena (Keke Palmer) and didn’t have enough money to pay the tab. Jeff had recommended the Restaurant to Arj, so Arj though it would be ok to use the company credit card until he could pay Jeff back. Jeff promptly fired him when he found out Arj had used the card for personal expenses. Now, thanks to Gabriel, Jeff has become Arj and is struggling. He is broke, living in Arj’s car and has no job. Arj is now living Jeff’s life, filthy rich and wanting nothing more to do with Gabriel. Gabriel has a big problem on his hands. Jeff wants his life back, Arj doesn’t want his life back, and if Martha finds out what he has done….Gabriel will lose his wings!

It is a hilariously Divine Intervention gone Rogue. Gabriel, Arj and Jeff’s journey leads to some incredibly funny predicaments. It also lends itself to heartfelt social commentary about how difficult life has become for a large swath of our population. Struggling to make ends meet by working multiple jobs, while the other 10% have no idea of the struggles of ordinary folks. Keanu Reeves is an absolute riot as the deadpan well meaning Angel Gabriel. Aziz Ansari’s exasperation and sharp, frantic wit as Arj exposes the absurdity of the gig economy, while Seth Rogen thrives as the “out-of-touch” billionaire forced to face reality. Finally, Sandra Oh steals every scene she’s in as the world’s most exhausted heavenly supervisor, delivering the perfect deadpan punch to this chaotic, high-stakes life swap.

Good Fortune is the humorous Love-Child of A Wonderful Life and Trading Places. Well worth a watch if you’re looking for a rare comedy that has as much to say as it does to laugh about; it’s a witty, warm-hearted reminder that in an unequal world, our greatest Fortune isn’t in our bank accounts, but in our shared humanity.
