The Rip (2026) – Review
Miami-Dade Police Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) is reeling from the loss of his son to cancer, and the failure and divorce of his marriage after his son’s death. It has left him with significant personal turmoil and severe financial trouble, leaving him heavily in debt. And to top that off, he is dealing with his boss’s, Captain Jackie Velez (Lina Esco), sudden murder. Lieutenant Dumars Unit, The Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT for short), act on tips to locate and seize large amounts of cash, drugs, or weapons from criminal stash houses, a process referred to as The Rip. They are currently being interrogated by FBI Agents who are investigating Captain Velez’s murder amid rumors of crooked cops robbing drug houses. Suspicion falling heavily them because of their involvement in finding and “Ripping” stash houses. Tension building within TNT because an FBI agent interrogating them is Lieutenant Dumars long time partner’s brother…………
Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Ben Affleck) resents his brothers insinuations that their team had anything to do with Captain Velez’ death or that they are anything but honest cops. Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne and FBI Agent Del Byrne (Scott Adkins) get into a physical fight during the interrogation. The tension and scrutiny is immense on them as they deal with their Captain’s death and investigation. Lieutenant Dumars received a text from Captain Jackie Velez on the night she was murdered saying there was a stash house with a lot of money in it and gave him the address. He suspects that there might be a crooked cop on his team and decides to investigate the house with them. He tells each one of them about it saying it was a Crime Stoppers anonymous tip, and tells each of them how much money is supposedly in the house. He tells each of them independently of one another, telling each one a different amount of money.
TNT makes it’s way to a Hialeah housing development at the end of a cul-de-sac. They knock and Desi Molina, whose late grandmother owned the house, reluctantly lets them inside, where they discover $20 million in cash, in an attic hidden room. Lieutenant Dumars forbids TNT to use their cell phones and confiscates them, knowing that this much cash is going to bring trouble if word gets out. They set up in the garage to count because TNT can’t leave until seizure money is counted. They’re stuck there now because rules in Florida and Miami-Dade are that you have to count a seizure on-scene. As they start to count the money they are visited by a local police unit who are anything but friendly. And this amount of money can only mean one thing, that this is a Cartel drug money stash house. To make matters worse, they start to realize that there is no activity at any of the houses in the cul-de-sac. The Cartel are known to quietly buy up entire neighborhoods around their stash houses.
They are sitting in a cul-de-sac that the Cartel owns, in one of their stash houses, with over $20 million in cash and crooked cops closing in. And that’s where the action and drama really kicks up, quickly. TNT is forced to make a stand and defend themselves while they count the money. Trust between team members quickly erodes as threats of violence start ramping up. Why not just take some money for themselves and leave, pretend like it never happened. “Are we the good guys?”, Lieutenant Dumars asks, it’s the slogan tattooed on his right hand, A.W.T.G.G. On the other hand is the answer, W.A.A.W.B., We Are and Always Will Be. It is the last thing his son asked him before he died, and the last thing he answered to his son. The Rip is a fast-paced, entertaining Crime Thriller based on Director Joe Carnahan’s best friend’s real life experience as a cop, who went through a similar situation in Miami – Dade County. Driven by the strong chemistry by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, it is an excellent Good Cop, Bad Cop, Dirty Cop Whodunnit, who do you trust, no holds barred action thriller woven with twists and turns you don’t see coming until the very end.
