The Wrecking Crew (2026) – Review
In Amazon Prime’s newest streaming movie, The Wrecking Crew, Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa star as estranged Hawaiian half-brothers forced to reconcile after their Father, Walter Hale, is killed in a hit-and-run accident. James Hale (Dave Bautista) is a U.S. Navy SEAL Commander, based and living in Hawaii. Jonny Hale (Jason Momoa) is a Police Detective living in Oklahoma with his girlfriend Valentina (Morena Baccarin). James is informed by the police about his father’s death and is not too shook up about it because he has been estranged from his father for years.
Walter Hale was a Private Investigator known to handle cases on the seedier side of life. He had a reputation as a hard-drinking womanizer not afraid to get down and dirty in the mud. James was his son from his first wife and Jonny was a “bastard” child born out of an affair Walter had. When James and Jonny were young, Jonny’s mother was murdered, supposedly related to Walter’s seedy investigations. Jonny was sent to Oklahoma to protect him from the same fate, but he has harbored deep rooted resentment at James, blaming him for his getting sent away.
As we first meet Jonny, he is arriving home on his motorcycle to find his girlfriend Valentina packing her belongings in her car. She has had enough and is leaving him. He begs and pleads with Valentina to change her mind and stay to no avail. Left alone and broken by her departure, Jonny starts to drink heavily, consuming everything in sight. He receives a call from James’ wife informing him that, since James and Jonny don’t talk to each other anymore, she decided to let him know about his Father’s death. Just then a group of assassins break into Jonny’s home and demand that Jonny give up the package his father sent him or they will kill him.
That begins the first official act of one half of The Wrecking Crew as Jason Momoa, wearing only a bath towel, goes head to head with a group of armed assassins and wrecks his house in the process. In the aftermath, Jonny concludes that his Father Walter’s death was no accidental hit-and-run, and decides to fly to Hawaii to find out who killed his father and why. At his Father’s funeral, the two brothers are reunited less than cordially, but talk enough to figure out that there is something suspicious about their father’s death. The problem is that there is a lot of history and bad feelings between them about their rocky childhood and Jonny’s Mom’s death.
This is where The Wrecking Crew really kicks into high gear as the two brothers battle each other over their past hurts, the local police, local crime syndicates, corrupt politicians and a Wealthy businessman intent on corrupting the Island with a brand new Casino. They tear apart the island trying to find out who is responsible for their father’s death. The battles, car and helicopter chases, violence and mayhem are all accompanied by a killer soundtrack featuring Billy Idol, ZZ Top, Player, Guns N Roses, Pat Benatar, Souls Of Mischief, Tommy Cash, RZA and more.
There is non-stop action and mayhem, and lots of laughs along the way. It is a familiar story, the underdog brothers on the hunt for truth and retaliation, up against the powers that be. Most of the action is well done, with the exception of a couple of scenes. There is a street scene where massive gunfire appears to miss a lot of the local civilian population and a helicopter shootout on a highway that borders on excessive CGI use. Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa are the perfect team in The Wrecking Crew, their chemistry is rock solid as the Hawaiian half-brothers James and Jonny. Morena Baccarin shines as the witty girlfriend Valentina, and Claes Bang is the villain you love to hate!
