June 26, 2026!
Get your movie tickets ready for the ultimate date-night-from-hell scenario. A24 is releasing The Invite, a wickedly funny and boundary-pushing relationship comedy, in select theaters this Friday, June 26, 2026 (with a nationwide expansion scheduled for July 10). Directed by Olivia Wilde and featuring an absolute powerhouse four-person main cast, this film originally caused a massive stir at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it scored a standing ovation and an eight-figure distribution deal.
The story takes place over the course of a single, highly unpredictable evening inside a spacious city apartment. Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Olivia Wilde) are a long-married couple whose relationship has cooled significantly down to ice-thin territory. Joe is constantly irritated by the very loud, highly disruptive noises traveling straight down through their ceiling from their upstairs neighbors’ bedroom.
Hoping to clear the air, Angela invites those enigmatic upstairs neighbors, Piña (Penélope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton), over for a seemingly innocent evening of wine and charcuterie. The polite small talk quickly disintegrates when Piña and Hawk reveal they are unapologetic, highly passionate swingers. The evening instantly spirals out of control as the neighbors extend an explicit, provocative proposition—forcing Joe and Angela to confront their own marital ruts, repressed frustrations, and sexual insecurities in the middle of the dinner party.
With a hyper-focus on just one room and four massive personalities, the entire film relies on its elite cast chemistry:
- Seth Rogen as Joe, a grumpy, cynical conservatory music teacher who is totally blindsided by the evening’s events.
- Olivia Wilde pulling double-duty as director and starring as Angela, a stay-at-home mom looking to reignite a spark in her marriage.
- Penélope Cruz & Edward Norton as Piña and Hawk, the wildly uninhibited, boundary-free upstairs couple who operate as a total contrast to Joe and Angela.
The film is written by the brilliant writing duo Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever). They adapted the story from Cesc Gay’s popular 2020 Spanish comedy film Sentimental (also known as The People Upstairs).
Following the heavy behind-the-scenes drama of her last feature Don’t Worry Darling, critics are hailing The Invite as a massive triumph for Wilde. She shot the film chronologically on gorgeous 35mm film, letting the actors truly build a chaotic, lived-in, and unpredictable rhythm.
