Amazon MGM Studios releases The Sheep Detectives in theaters this Friday. Directed by Kyle Balda and Produced by Lindsay Doran, this wooly whodunnit features an ensemble cast: Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Tosin Cole with Hong Chau and Emma Thompson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, Rhys Darby.
Synopsis
In this witty, new breed of mystery, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved flock of sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep might be brilliant crime-solvers.
A Wooly Whodunnit Begins
The story of The Sheep Detectives began many years ago – nineteen, in fact. Producer Lindsay Doran was talking with her doctor about the books they were reading and the doctor mentioned a book about “a shepherd who’s murdered and the sheep who solve the crime.” “I immediately thought this was one of the best ideas for a movie I’d ever heard,” says Doran. “I could see why it would be funny, I could see why it would be emotional, and I could see why it would be a very unusual murder mystery.”
Doran has specialized during her four-decade career in movies featuring “big jokes and strong emotions” including Sense and Sensibility, Stranger Than Fiction and Nanny McPhee. When she read Leonie Swann’s novel Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story, she saw all of the elements she had hoped for and more.
